One of the most devastating periods in twentieth-century history was the rule of Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge over Cambodia. From April 1975 to the beginning of the Vietnamese occupation in late December 1978, the country underwent perhaps the most violent and far-reaching of all modern revolutions. These six essays search for what can be explained in the ultimately inexplicable evils perpetrated by the Khmer Rouge. Accompanying them is a photo essay that provides shocking visual evidence of the tragedy of Cambodia's autogenocide. ""The most important examination of the subject so far.... Wi

U.S global hegemony looks set to be challenged by the two emerging giants of the 21st century, China and India. However, it would be a mistake to view China and India as one Asian polity, because these two countries differ greatly from each other, as Lal explains in this book. Based on 80 in-depth interviews with government officials and scholars in Beijing and New Delhi, the author's research yields some surprising news about the differences between China and India. Chinese leaders define their national interest as preservation of the state and territorial unity, whereas Indian decision makers define their national interests in relation to forces beyond India, such as the forces of globalisation and their geopolitical status. One factor among the many explored in this book that accounts for these differences is the influence of one-party rule in China and parliamentary democracy in India. Another important finding is that China and India are unlikely to pursue hostility with each other. Lal investigates the implications of the rise of China and India for U.S foreign policy and world security.

Few general books are currently available on Indonesia despite its enormous human and economic resources. Hence the importance of this book, which offeres the latest research of internationally respected scholars with extensive first-hand experience in the archipelago. Their particular concern is with the realities of power and the patterns of communication in a society distinguished by both its poverty and its great potential. The contributors to the volume span a wide spectrum of viewpoints, and present various interpretation of Indonesian society. Taken together, however, the essays support the thesis that Indonesia is a "bureaucratic polity"--a political system in which power is hierarchically organized, influence is monopolized by an official elite, and individuals outside officialdom have little effect on events. These authorities examine in depth such subjects as the role of the military, the impact of bureaucracy, the importance of political parties, the character of the mass media, and the direction of economic development as well as other matters essential for an understanding of current development in the country. Political Power and Communications in Indonesia is addressed not only to students of Indonesia or specialists in comparative politics and political development but quite as directly to persons seeking basic information about an extremely interesting and complex society. Its broad coverage makes it a veritable handbook about how government functions in Indonesia.
