Abstract

This title considers various issues regarding celibacy and Christianity including the following: how the female body is used to underpin exploitative social systems, how Christianity has tried to control the bodies of women through regulations about the female body, how women have used celibacy to subvert the social order, how radical incarnationalism and queer theory create new challenges to traditional understandings of celibacy, how being erotic and celibate may manifest in social, sexual and political ways. It also explores how being erotically celibate challenges patriarchal society and opens up new theological understanding.

Abstract

This book examines the power to define sexuality. It asks whether women are even present in the many acts of religious/sexual intercourse that define and control, but rarely engage them. A number of authors reflect from varying perspectives on the status of women within patriarchal understandings of sexuality. They take seriously the bodies of women as sites of resistance to patriarchy, in the pain of those bodies, their fecundity and their capacity for erotic revolution. For this book also explores ways to rebel! [publisher's description]

Abstract

This book sets out to examine the ambiguous relationship that Christianity has with the body. Incarnation is central to Christian belief but that doctrine has not encouraged a positive theology of the body. The authors explore why this has been so and examine ways in which a more body-positive theology can be developed using our Christian heritage. Starting from a feminist perspective they reclaim women's bodies from the embrace of patriarchy and in doing so clearly show how this reclamation challenges many systems of oppression. (SAP)

Abstract

Women in Christianity in the Modern Age examines the role of women in Christianity in the 20th and early 21st Centuries. This edited volume includes eight important contributions from academics in the field. The modern era has been an age of social and religious upheaval, and the ravages of global warfare and changes to women’s role in society have made the examination of the place of women in religion a key question in theology. From theological concerns - engagements with the biblical texts by feminist and anti-feminist theologians, the modern role of Mary and women saints – to political and social debates on women’s ministry and place in society, and cultural shifts as expressed through theologically inspired artwork by women, Women in Christianity in the Modern Age provides an overview and in-depth studies of a tumultuous and changing era. This insightful text will be of key interest to students and scholars in Religion and Cultural Studies.
