Abstract

COOP 2012 is the tenth COOP conference, marking twenty years from the first conference in 1992. In this special anniversary edition we asked researchers and practitioners to reflect on what have been the successes and the failures in designing cooperative systems, and what challenges still need to be addressed. We have come a long way in understanding the intricacies of cooperation and in designing systems that support work practices and collective activities. These advances would not have been possible without the concerted effort of contributions from a plethora of domains including CSCW, HCI, Information Systems, Knowledge Engineering, Multi-agent systems, organizational and management sciences, sociology, psychology, anthropology, ergonomics, linguistics, etc. The COOP community is going from strength to strength in developing new technologies, advancing and proposing new methodological approaches, and forging theories. From Research to Practice in the Design of Cooperative Systems: Results and Open Challenges presents theoretical contributions, empirical studies, systems development and evaluation, and innovative concepts on the following topics: Conceptual frameworks for understanding cooperative work or collective practices Guidelines for designing cooperative systems The influence of technologies (intelligent devices, mobile computing, ubiquitous computing, etc.) on cooperation Expertise, knowledge sharing and learning in cooperative work Communities and new forms of organization Innovative technological solutions and user interfaces for cooperation Methods for participatory design of cooperative systems Applications for, and studies of, social networking (including experiences in industrial contexts) Analysis of collective practices or collaborative work Reports of usage experiences and case studies.

Abstract

CSCW has always been associated with support for complex work practices within organisations and a related concern with the relationship between traditional co-located work practices and newer, computer mediated, practices. Equally importantly, it has maintained a steadfastly critical, creative and rigorous approach to the problems under its remit. Many challenges were identified in CSCW some thirty years ago, and some of these remain problematic today. However they are being progressively transformed and this edited volume contains contributions that demonstrate how these new challenges are being dealt with in a variety of ways, reflecting the balance of rigour and creativity that has always characterised the field. Originally presented at COOP ’08 which took place in Carry-le-Rouet, France in 2008, the contributions to this volume have been substantially extended and revised. New technologies, new domains and new methods are described for supporting design and evaluation. Taking a progressive and critical stance, the authors cover a variety of themes including inter-organisational working, non task-based environments, creativity, and the development of Web 2.0 (and even Web 3.0) applications, including new cooperative mechanisms and new classification possibilities.

Abstract

COOP’10 is the 9th edition of the International Conference on Designing Cooperative Systems, being the second European conference in the field of Computer Supported Cooperative Work. The conference brings together researchers who contribute to the analysis and design of cooperative systems and their integration in organizational community, public and other settings, and their implications for policy and decision-making. Cooperative systems design requires a deep understanding of collective activities, involving both artifacts and social practices. Contributions stem from a wide range of domains contributing to the fields of cooperative systems design and evaluation: CSCW, HCI, Information Systems, Knowledge Engineering, organizational and management sciences, sociology, psychology, anthropology, ergonomics, linguistics. This book presents theoretical contributions, empirical studies reports, software development experiences, and innovative concepts on the following topics: •Distributed design and distributed social awareness •Artifact-Centered Design in Healthcare •Practices Analysis and Digital Platform Design •Disaster Response Process Management Systems •Content-based image retrieval scenarios •Collaborative Multimedia Annotation •Photo Usage in Archaeology •Structuring Group Tasks through Negotiating Resources •Social Capital and Cooperation Infrastructures within Microfinance •Democratic Decision-Making mediated by an Online Social Environment •Computer Enabled Social Movements •Appropriation of the Eclipse Ecosystem •Collective Efficacy in Scientific Communities •Laboratory Notebooks •The concept of ‘work’ in CSCW.
