Abstract

‘Smart’ sensors are increasingly being employed, not only in industrial settings, but in every aspect of human life. Sensors are used to monitor health, detect viral infections, select the appropriate cycle for washing machines, monitor traffic, manage intelligent buildings and control processes in a manufacturing plant. Sensors are used to gather a wealth of information from the process that can improve operational efficiency and product quality. Smart sensors include features such as communication capability and on-board diagnostics. Sensors are now omni-present and ubiquitous. Leading edge research in sensors has been propelled by the advancements made in MEMS technology in the last decade. The scientific world is now on the verge of delivering sensors with radically new capabilities. In many scenarios, multitudes of smart sensors, with limited power and processing capabilities, are being organised in networks to perform more challenging tasks. This book deals with the theoretical and practical aspects of building, deploying and operating smart sensors. Several informative articles deal with sensor networks, gas and bio sensors, Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) devices, sensors for health applications, acoustic imaging, home monitoring of elderly people etc. The book is a compilation of the extended versions of the very best papers selected from the many that were presented at the 2nd International Conference on Sensing Technology (ICST 2007) which was held at Palmerston North, New Zealand, from 26-28 November, 2007. Scientist and engineers who work with sensors will find this book very useful and stimulating.

Abstract

This Special Issue titled "Recent Advances in Sensing Technology" in the book series of "Lecture Notes in Electrical Engineering" contains the extended version of the papers selected from those that were presented at the 3rd International Conference on Sensing Technology (ICST 2008) which was held in November 30 to December 3, 2008 at National Cheng-Kung University, Tainan, Taiwan. A total of 131 papers were presented at ICST 2008, of which 19 papers have been selected for this special issue. This Special Issue has focused on the recent advancements of the different aspects of sensing technology, i.e. information processing, adaptability, recalibration, data fusion, validation, high reliability and integration of novel and high performance sensors. The advancements are in the areas of magnetic, ultrasonic, vision and image sensing, wireless sensors and network, microfluidic, tactile, gyro, flow, surface acoustic wave, humidity, gas, MEMS thermal and ultra-wide band. While future interest in this field is ensured by the constant supply of emerging modalities, techniques and engineering solutions, many of the basic concepts and strategies have already matured and now offer opportunities to build upon.

Abstract

The present book includes a set of selected papers from the 5th "International Conference on Informatics in Control Automation and Robotics" (ICINCO 2008), held in Funchal-Madeira, Portugal, 11-15 May 2008. The conference was organized in three simultaneous tracks: "Intelligent Control Systems and Optimization", "Robotics and Automation" and "Systems Modeling, Signal Processing and Control". The book is based on the same structure. The purpose of this conference is to bring together researchers, engineers and practitioners interested in the application of informatics to Control, Automation and Robotics. Informatics applications are pervasive in many areas of Control, Automation and Robotics, and this conference intends to emphasize this connection, therefore, most papers highlight applications of Information Technology (IT) in these areas and present ideas on how to solve problems using IT, both in R&D and industrial applications. A diversity of papers are included in the book, ranging from papers describing advanced prototypes, systems, tools and techniques to papers presenting surveys indicating future directions.
