The second Venice Architecture Biennale, directed by Paolo Portoghesi, raised questions about a postmodernity throughout realms extending south and east from the Mediterranean, where modernity and decolonisation were converging. Though the exhibition on architecture in Islamic countries was largely forgotten, these questions are ever more relevant. Selected texts by Portoghesi, Mehdi Kowsar and Udo Kultermann from the original exhibition catalogue, which was published only in Italian, are translated for the first time for an English-speaking readership and accompanied by commentary. Following an introduction by the editor, Esra Akcan reflects on the historical and socio-political contexts of the exhibition. In addition, Asli Çiçek and Véronique Patteeuw consider the catalogue itself from an architectural history perspective. Together, this historical and contemporary material suggests starting points for investigating this broadly overlooked biennale.

The official catalog of the 15th Venice Biennale Architecture Exhibition. More and more people on the planet are looking for a decent place to live, even though the chances to find one are becoming tougher and tougher by the hour. Nevertheless, on the frontlines of the built environment there lingers a sense of vitality that brings architecture to look at reality in a positive way. This is what people will see at the 15th International Architecture Exhibition: success stories and exemplary cases where architecture has made, is making, and will make a difference. Reporting from the Front aims at explaining to a broader audience what it means to improve the quality of life while working on the margins, under heavy circumstances, and facing pressing challenges. And what it is like to be on the cutting edge trying to conquer new fields.

In response to the theme of the 2016 Venice Biennial, Portugal presented a site-specific pavilion occupying an urban front in the midst of physical and social regeneration on Giudecca, an archipelago just south of Venice. The pavilion exhibited four works by Pritzger Prize winner Alvaro Siza (born 1933) on the theme of social housing--Campo di Marte (Venice), Schilderswijk (The Hague), Schlesisches Tor (Berlin) and Bairro da Bouca (Porto)--revealing his collaborative experience with the local inhabitants and unique understanding of the European city and citizenship. These projects resulted in the creation of neighborhood spaces aimed at a more tolerant, multicultural society, a subject important to the current European political agenda. This book unveils the curatorial process and the display of these works in Venice. Included are images of Siza's recent visits to the neighborhoods, plus a presentation of the changes triggered by immigration, ghettoization, gentrification and "touristification."

Perspectives on Architectural Design Research is an exciting collection of short essays, projects and edited transcripts that offers current perspectives on design research in architecture and aligned disciplines. Contributors include international figures. What emerges from the multiple perspectives is that contemporary design research - transdisciplinary, multi-scalar and concerning place, people, space and time - provides a collective and subtle mechanism that is propositional and transformative. The shared optimism of the contributors is that this propositional mode of research can be of catalytic value for contemporary culture and society.
