The Haitian constitution was drawn up to replace the 1804 constitution, which had been destroyed during the war after only a few months in operation and was ratified on 1 May 1946. The constitution (adopted by the Constituent Assembly) was based largely on that of the United States. It grants citizens a number of rights, including: peoples' safety, health and education; freedom of opinion, expression and association; freedom to move around the country freely; right to property; right to access public documents; right to fair trial and so on.
