This book deals with the topic on remote sensing monitoring of desert locust in Africa and Asia. Remote sensing monitoring of the occurrence and damage of desert locust is conducted by integrating cutting-edge technologies and methods in cross-disciplinary fields in remote sensing science, geographic information science, agronomy, plant protection, agricultural meteorology, mathematics, and computer science. The main contents include spatio-temporal data analysis and processing, desert locust breeding areas monitoring, pest migration path analysis and damage monitoring. Moreover, a desert locust remote sensing monitoring system is constructed and applied in the region of Africa and Asia countries. This book not only provides technical reference for remote sensing monitoring and application of desert locust but also serves as a research reference for scholars and graduate students engaged in agricultural remote sensing, agricultural information technology, plant protection and other related field. It will help to improve remote sensing monitoring and application of desert locust.

The publication of this book marks the fifteenth anniversary of the outbreak of the SARS epidemic in Hong Kong in 2003. This documentary study, originating as a research project a year after the epidemic, is a comprehensive attempt to examine the development of public health in Hong Kong from 1841 to the early 1990s. It covers the periods of prewar colonial rule, Japanese occupation, postwar reconstruction and growth, and the beginning of decolonization. It analyzes political, social, economic, and cultural factors, including the intersection of colonial priorities and indigenous agency and practices that affected disease outbreaks and development, government and local responses, advances in technology related to health and medicine, as well as the emergence of health agencies and institutions. The historical documents, selected from government archives, personal papers, and special collections, are invaluable source materials for the critical evaluation of such developments. The book provides a much needed and indispensable historical perspective to understanding Hong Kong's struggle to combat prevalent and emerging diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis, avian influenza, and SARS.

This book shows recent and innovative applications of the use of hyperspectral technology for optimal quantification of crop, vegetation, and soil biophysical variables at various spatial scales, which can be an important aspect in agricultural management practices and monitoring. The articles collected inside the book are intended to help researchers and farmers involved in precision agriculture techniques and practices, as well as in plant nutrient prediction, to a higher comprehension of strengths and limitations of the application of hyperspectral imaging to agriculture and vegetation. Hyperspectral remote sensing for studying agriculture and natural vegetation is a challenging research topic that will remain of great interest for different sciences communities in decades.
