Abstract

From his earliest days, Lincoln spoke to the public directly through the press. When war broke out and the nation was tearing itself apart, Lincoln authorized the most widespread censorship in the nation's history, closing down papers that were "disloyal" and even jailing or exiling editors who opposed enlistment or sympathized with secession. The telegraph, the new invention that made instant reporting possible, was moved to the office of Secretary of War Stanton to deny it to unfriendly newsmen. Holzer shows us politicized newspaper editors battling for power, and a masterly president using the press to speak directly to the people and shape the nation.

Abstract

One of America’s most prolific sculptors of public monuments, Daniel Chester French created more than a hundred public works, including *The Minuteman Man*, Harvard University’s *John Harvard**, Columbia University’s *Alma Mater*, and most famously, the statue of Abraham Lincoln for the awe-inspiring Lincoln Memorial.Born in 1850 and raised in Concord, Massachusetts, in the tumult of the Civil War, French’s meteoric ascent as an artist led him to cross paths with some of the most fascinating characters of his time, such as Louisa May Alcott, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Auguste Rodin, and Theodore Roosevelt. In addition to his work as an artist, French was a trustee of the Metropolitan Museum of Art from 1903 until his death in 1931 and was a key figure in the acquisition of the museum’s extensive collection of American sculpture.*Monument Man* is the first definitive biography of Daniel Chester French, giving readers a captivating and extensively researched view into his world. Eminent historian Harold Holzer, winner of the 2015 Gilder Lehrman Lincoln Prize, brings French's story to life, vividly illustrating his personal and artistic development within the dynamic cultural milieu at the turn of the twentieth century, from the vibrant creative community of Concord to the bucolic gardens of Chesterwood, French's country estate and studio in Stockbridge, Massachusetts.Full of rich biographical detail and beatiful archival photographs, *Monument Man* is a sweeping study of a major artist whose evolution ran parallel to, and deeply influenced, the development of American sculpture, iconography, and historic memory.

Abstract

Emancipating Lincoln seeks a new approach to the Emancipation Proclamation, a foundational text of American liberty that in recent years has been subject to woeful misinterpretation. These seventeen hundred words are Lincoln's most important piece of writing, responsible both for his being hailed as the Great Emancipator and for his being pilloried by those who consider his once-radical effort at emancipation insufficient and half-hearted.Harold Holzer, an award-winning Lincoln scholar, invites us to examine the impact of Lincoln's momentous announcement at the moment of its creation, and then as its meaning has changed over time. Using neglected original sources, Holzer uncovers Lincoln's very modern manipulation of the media-from his promulgation of disinformation to the ways he variously withheld, leaked, and promoted the Proclamation-in order to make his society-altering announcement palatable to America. Examining his agonizing revisions, we learn why a peerless prose writer executed what he regarded as his "greatest act" in leaden language. Turning from word to image, we see the complex responses in American sculpture, painting, and illustration across the past century and a half, as artists sought to criticize, lionize, and profit from Lincoln's endeavor.Holzer shows the faults in applying our own standards to Lincoln's efforts, but also demonstrates how Lincoln's obfuscations made it nearly impossible to discern his true motives. As we approach the 150th anniversary of the Proclamation, this concise volume is a vivid depiction of the painfully slow march of all Americans-white and black, leaders and constituents-toward freedom.

Abstract

As president, Abraham Lincoln received between two hundred and five hundred letters a day-correspondence from public officials, political allies, and military leaders, as well as letters from ordinary Americans of all races who wanted to share their views with him. Here, and in his critically acclaimed volume Dear Mr. Lincoln, editor Harold Holzer has rescued these voices-sometimes eloquent, occasionally angry, at times poetic-from the obscurity of the archives of the Civil War. The Lincoln Mailbag includes letters written by African Americans, which Lincoln never sa

Abstract

It is the most famous speech Lincoln ever gave, and one of the most important orations in the history of the nation. Delivered on November 19, 1863, among the freshly dug graves of the Union dead, the Gettysburg Address defined the central meaning of the Civil War and gave cause for the nation's incredible suffering. The poetic language and moral sentiment inspired listeners at the time, and have continued to resonate powerfully with groups and individuals up to the present day. What gives this speech its enduring significance? This collection of essays, from some of the best-known scholars in

Abstract

William Osborn Stoddard, Lincoln's "third secretary" who worked alongside John G. Nicolay and John Hay in the White House from 1861 to 1865, completed his autobiography in 1907, one of more than one hundred books he wrote. An abridged version was published by his son in 1955 as "Lincoln's Third Secretary: The Memoirs of William O. Stoddard."; In this new, edited version, Lincoln's White House Secretary: The Adventurous Life of William O. Stoddard, Harold Holzer provides an introduction, afterword, and annotations and includes comments by Stoddard's granddaughter, Eleanor Stoddard.
