The problem of divine knowledge, focusing on questions of freedom and necessity, finds itself at the intersection of age-old discussions of logic, metaphysics, and ethics. The subject was discussed with particular clarity in the period 1250-1400. Many different solutions were put forward and criticized with an acuity and depth that was never reached again. One contributor to the discussion, Marsilius of Inghen (d. 1396), is of special importance. He assimilated not only the nominalism and theological developments of the 14th century, but also the ideas of Thomas Aquinas and Bonaventure, resulting in the so-called via marsiliana . This study determines with great precision Marsilius's position in the debates in the period 1250-1400, often throwing new light on aspects of his philosophy and theology. The wide scope of his work makes it suitable as a general introduction to medieval thought. Specialists will find it useful for its detailed and in-depth analysis of both maiores and minores . By its clear style and structure, this study will prove useful in contemporary systematic discussions of the subject as well.

Boethius' Consolatio Philosophiae is one of those exceptional works that circulated widely throughout such diverse medieval cultures as the schools and universities, the court, and religious houses. It spawned a rich tradition of Latin commentaries and was a major force in shaping vernacular literary traditions, including the works of Jean de Meun, Dante, and Chaucer. The changing perceptions of the Consolatio are the subject of this collection of new essays. The first section is devoted to the Latin commentary tradition (William of Conches, Nicholas Trevet, and Pierre d'Ailly). The other sections explore the vernacular traditions (Italian, French, German, English, and Dutch). The book underlines the interactions between the Latin and the vernacular and between literary and scholastic contexts, and the focus throughout is on the intellectual and institutional background of the works discussed.

This volume evinces the vitality and multi-perspectivism characteristic of Medieval Studies today. There was a time, not so long ago, when Medieval Studies constituted a major pillar for the understanding of the history of human civilization. Today, things are different. While the medieval contribution to the project of humanity remains beyond doubt, the challenges facing those interested in history have changed definitively. Currently, different responses to the new situation are under discussion, each with its own potential and challenges: e.g., global medievalism, digital humanities, comparative history, rethinking the cultural narrative. In this volume, specialists from the fields of Digital Humanities, History, Literary Studies, Philosophy, and Theology share with the readers their views about the possible futures of Medieval Studies. They evince the vitality and multi-perspectivism characteristic of the field today, showing that Medieval Studies looks to a future that, while different from the past, promises to be at least as rich and creative. The papers collected here were first presented and discussed at the 6th European Congress of Medieval Studies of the Fédération Internationale des Instituts d’Etudes Médiévales (FIDEM), which was held at the University of Basel, Switzerland, 2–5 September 2018.

The commentary of Pietro d'Abano on Bartholomew's Latin transation of Pseudo-Aristotle's "Problemata Physica, published in 1310, constitues an important historical source for the investigation of the complex relationship between text, translation, and commentary in a non-curricular part of the "corpus Aristotelicum". As the eights articles in this volume show, the study of Pietro's commentary not only provides valuable insights into the manner in which a commentator deals with the problems of a translated text, but will also bring to light the idiosyncrasy of Pietro's approach in comparison to his contemporaries and successors, the particularities of his commentary in light of the habitual exegetical practices applied in the teaching of regular texts, as well as the influence of philosophical traditions outside the strict framework of the medieval arts faculty.

Marsilius of Inghen’s Sentences Commentary is a crucial piece of evidence in the history of thought between Ockham and Luther, covering almost the complete range of items important in pre-modern philosophy and theology. The part edited here is concerned with the Trinity, dealing with the unity and the distinction of the divine persons. It addresses the use of logic in theology, the dialectics between authority and reason, and reveals new evidence on the debates between Realists and Nominalists at the Universities of Paris and Heidelberg. The present edition provides the reader a first critical text based on an assessment of all textual witnesses, thus offering an indispensable tool for uncovering the intricacies of Scholasticism at the eve of Reformation.

The commentary of the Italian physician and philosopher Pietro d'Abano on Bartholomew of Messina's Latin translation of Pseudo-Aristotle's 'Problemata Physica', published in 1310, constitutes an important historical source. In a section of the corpus Aristotelicum that was not part of the standard curriculum at the medieval university, the commentary of Pietro d'Abano investigates the complex relationship between text, translation, and commentary. The eight articles in this volume provide valuable insights into the manner in which Pietro d'Abano deals with the problems of a translated text. They emphasize the idiosyncrasy of his approach in comparison to his contemporaries and successors, the particularities of his commentary in light of the habitual exegetical practices applied in the teaching of curricular texts, as well as the influence of philosophical traditions outside the strict framework of the medieval arts faculty.

The Geistbuch is an anonymous vernacular theological treatise from the first half of the 14th century that circulated in Middle High German and Middle Dutch. Based on the biblical injunction of Jesus to Peter, Sequere me (“Follow me”, John 21:19), the text describes the Christian path of perfection. The present volume offers for the first time a critical edition of the Geistbuch in its original Middle High German. It also includes a commentary on the sources, a reconstruction of the text’s history and tradition, an analysis of its structure and method of argumentation and a word index. The edited text gives us insights into vernacular theological debates concurrent with the trial of Meister Eckhart, and into the dynamic of their circulation along the Rhine valley from southwest Germany to Dutch Brabant.
