Boethius' Consolatio Philosophiae is one of those exceptional works that circulated widely throughout such diverse medieval cultures as the schools and universities, the court, and religious houses. It spawned a rich tradition of Latin commentaries and was a major force in shaping vernacular literary traditions, including the works of Jean de Meun, Dante, and Chaucer. The changing perceptions of the Consolatio are the subject of this collection of new essays. The first section is devoted to the Latin commentary tradition (William of Conches, Nicholas Trevet, and Pierre d'Ailly). The other sections explore the vernacular traditions (Italian, French, German, English, and Dutch). The book underlines the interactions between the Latin and the vernacular and between literary and scholastic contexts, and the focus throughout is on the intellectual and institutional background of the works discussed.

This volume evinces the vitality and multi-perspectivism characteristic of Medieval Studies today. There was a time, not so long ago, when Medieval Studies constituted a major pillar for the understanding of the history of human civilization. Today, things are different. While the medieval contribution to the project of humanity remains beyond doubt, the challenges facing those interested in history have changed definitively. Currently, different responses to the new situation are under discussion, each with its own potential and challenges: e.g., global medievalism, digital humanities, comparative history, rethinking the cultural narrative. In this volume, specialists from the fields of Digital Humanities, History, Literary Studies, Philosophy, and Theology share with the readers their views about the possible futures of Medieval Studies. They evince the vitality and multi-perspectivism characteristic of the field today, showing that Medieval Studies looks to a future that, while different from the past, promises to be at least as rich and creative. The papers collected here were first presented and discussed at the 6th European Congress of Medieval Studies of the Fédération Internationale des Instituts d'Etudes Médiévales (FIDEM), which was held at the University of Basel, Switzerland, 2-5 September 2018.

The German philosophical culture of the Middle Ages is inextricably linked to the thought of Albert the Great. The writings of Albert set a definitive stamp on the mysticism of Eckhart and Tauler as well as on the intellectual traditions of the studia of the Dominican order and the German universities of the later Middle Ages. During this process Albert's thinking was not simply adopted, but was further developed and was frequently given a quite new form by the various fields of intellectual life. This volume brings together 14 original papers, which deal with Albert's influence from the points of view of mysticism, literature, philosophy, theology and the history of universities. The commentary of the Italian physician and philosopher Pietro d'Abano on Bartholomew of Messina's Latin translation of Pseudo-Aristotle's 'Problemata Physica', published in 1310, constitutes an important historical source. In a section of the corpus Aristotelicum that was not part of the standard curriculum at the medieval university, the commentary of Pietro d'Abano investigates the complex relationship between text, translation, and commentary. The eight articles in this volume provide valuable insights into the manner in which Pietro d'Abano deals with the problems of a translated text. They emphasize the idiosyncrasy of his approach in comparison to his contemporaries and successors, the particularities of his commentary in light of the habitual exegetical practices applied in the teaching of curricular texts, as well as the influence of philosophical traditions outside the strict framework of the medieval arts faculty.

The Geistbuch is an anonymous vernacular theological treatise from the first half of the 14th century that circulated in Middle High German and Middle Dutch. Based on the biblical injunction of Jesus to Peter, Sequere me (“Follow me”, John 21:19), the text describes the Christian path of perfection. The present volume offers for the first time a critical edition of the Geistbuch in its original Middle High German. It also includes a commentary on the sources, a reconstruction of the text’s history and tradition, an analysis of its structure and method of argumentation and a word index. The edited text gives us insights into vernacular theological debates concurrent with the trial of Meister Eckhart, and into the dynamic of their circulation along the Rhine valley from southwest Germany to Dutch Brabant. Das 'Geistbuch' ist ein anonymer theologischer Traktat in der Volkssprache aus der ersten Hälfte des 14. Jahrhunderts, der ausgehend von dem Herrenwort Sequere me (Io. 21, 19) den christlichen Weg zur Vollkommenheit diskutiert und im mittelhochdeutschen und mittelniederländischen Sprachraum überliefert wurde. Der vorliegende Band bietet erstmals eine kritische Edition des 'Geistbuchs' in seiner ursprünglichen mittelhochdeutschen Fassung, zusammen mit einer quellenkritischen Kommentierung. Eine Darstellung der Text- und Überlieferungsgeschichte, eine Analyse von Textstruktur und Argumentationsgang sowie ein Wörterverzeichnis runden die Arbeit ab. Der edierte Text vermittelt Einblicke in die volkssprachlichen theologischen Diskussionen aus der Zeit des Prozesses gegen Meister Eckhart und ihre Überlieferungsdynamik im Austausch zwischen dem deutschen Südwesten und dem niederländischen Brabant entlang der Rheinschiene.
