With a focus on practical patient related issues, Autoimmune Hepatitis: A Guide for Practicing Clinicians serves as a useful practical, and much needed, resource for all those physicians presented with managing patients diagnosed with autoimmune hepatitis, both acutely and over the long term. It provides a basis for clinicians to understand the etiology of the disease, as well as special circumstances where management dilemmas often arise. Emphasis is given to providing management advice of immediate use to clinicians, something not presently offered by other larger general texts. The chapters are written by those with an expertise and training in this field and include the most up to date information. This book is of great value to Gastroenterologists, Hepatologists, and Internists at all levels who see patients presenting with autoimmune hepatitis.

This book addresses the current understanding of the diagnosis and management of biliary disease across all ages, with emphasis on how the latest advances in clinical science may be integrated into current and future therapies. The coverage is wide ranging, encompassing congenital and acquired conditions including cholestatic syndromes, biliary atresia, drug-induced cholestasis, primary biliary cholangitis/cirrhosis, primary sclerosing cholangitis, cholangiocarcinoma, gallstone disease, and autoimmune sclerosing cholangitis. With contributions from basic and clinical scientists, the relevance of state-of-the-art mechanistic biology to diagnosis, treatment, and future opportunities for drug design is clearly explained. The balance between science and clinical practice will ensure that this book makes a lasting contribution to the field. A broad readership will find the book easy to access and a rich source of information on current best practice and evolving management strategies.

"Commonly measured liver tests include albumin, alanine and aspartate aminotransferases, alkaline phosphatase and GGT. None of these analytes is specific for liver disease nor do they measure liver function. Normal liver tests do not exclude the presence of liver disease. Abnormal liver tests should not be ignored and may reflect either primary liver disease or the effects of extra-hepatic disease, toxins or medication. Usually, a history, clinical examination and further serological tests will define the cause of the abnormality but imaging and, rarely, liver biopsy will be required to establish the diagnosis and monitor treatment where appropriate. Normal range of liver analytes may be affected by many factors including age, gender, ethnicity and physiological conditions (such as pregnancy)"--
