Jim Reed has taught German language and literature at the University of Oxford since 1961 and retires on 30 September 2004. This collection of essays in his honour consists of contributions from friends and pupils, and is principally concerned with Goethe, Heine, Nietzsche, Thomas Mann, and Brecht. The themes and approaches represented are those with which Reed himself has engaged in many of his own publications, beginning with Thomas Mann: The Uses of Tradition (1974) and The Classical Centre: Goethe and Weimar (1980), and which is summed up in the title given to his recent collection of essays »Humanpraxis Literatur«. Jim Reed lehrt seit 1961 als Germanist an der Universität Oxford und wird am 30. September 2004 emeritiert. Die Festschrift versammelt Beiträge von Freunden und Schülern und ist in erster Linie Goethe, Heine, Nietzsche, Thomas Mann und Brecht gewidmet. Damit erfolgt eine Auseinandersetzung mit Themen und Forschungsansätzen, die Reed seit seinen ersten Buchpublikationen (Thomas Mann: The Uses of Tradition, 1974 und The Classical Centre: Goethe und Weimar, 1980) beschäftigt und für die er in einer kürzlich erschienenen Aufsatzsammlung mit dem Stichwort »Humanpraxis Literatur« eine prägnante Charakterisierung gefunden hat.

Prof. Dr. Uwe Koreik has played a decisive role in shaping the subject of German as a Foreign and Second Language in academic and institutional terms over the past decades. Under the title Beruf(ung) DaF/DaZ, which reflects Uwe Koreik's decades of commitment to the subject and the people associated with it, the commemorative publication for him on the occasion of his 65th birthday is now available. It combines 24 academic contributions and 16 vignettes in two volumes. The academic contributions, written by renowned representatives of the field, trace Uwe Koreik's academic career and address topics from his fields of work and research: Cultural Studies, Film and Literature, Places of Remembrance as well as the field of testing and examination.
