Abstract

In the interpretive literature from the 1950's through the 1970's the term 'criterion' was thought to be a central key to the understanding of Wittgenstein's later philosophy. Later on, it was relegated from this place of honour to being one of a variety of expressions used by Wittgenstein in dealing with philosophical questions. This Element tries to account for the shifting fate of this concept. It discusses the various occurrences of the word "criteria" in the Philosophical Investigations, argues that the post-Wittgensteinian debate about criteria was put on the wrong track by a problematic passage in Wittgenstein's early Blue Book, and finally gives an overview of the main contributions to this debate, trying to achieve a reconciliation between the rival conceptions.

Abstract

This work is guided by the idea that Wittgenstein's thought opens the door to a more profound break with the philosophical tradition than has been generally recognized. It brings this insight to bear on some basic problems of philosophy.

Wittgenstein's work has been assimilated to the analytic tradition in such a way that its radical character has been made nearly invisible. In fact, Wittgenstein formulates a basic critique of a predominant conception in contemporary analytic philosophy, according to which language can be seen as a formal structure describable in general terms. This conception neglects the profound context-dependence of the way things said are to be understood, thus imposing a schematic view of the connections between words and life. By distancing us from the life we live with language, it makes the problems of philosophy come to appear intractable. In this work, the attempt is made to show how philosophical confusions are to be overcome through attending to the actual use of words in conversation. The questions discussed belong to what would commonly be called the philosophy of language and of logic, ethics, philosophical anthropology, philosophy of religion and aesthetics.

Several of the essays will contain attempts at interpreting key passages from Wittgenstein's work, but they will also contain some criticisms of Wittgenstein as well as of certain common ways of reading him; however, their main purpose is not to interpret Wittgenstein but to address the problems raised in their own right.

Abstract

How is linguistic theory related to linguistic practice? What do theoretical notions and models tell us about real-life language use? Are there any limits to what such notions and models can reasonably be taken to accomplish? These questions are fundamental to any serious investigation into the phenomena of human communication. The essays in this book show that philosophers and linguists of quite different brands have tended to give undue priority to their own favourite theoretical framework, and have presupposed that the descriptive scheme invoked by that framework constitutes a pattern to which any linguistic practice somehow has to conform. What unites the contributors to this volume is a critical attitude towards such essentialist aspirations. By investigating several concrete examples of this tendency - examples collected from such seemingly disparate areas as structuralism, contemporary analytic philosophy and feminist epistemology - the authors collectively manage to cast doubt on the very attempt to fit the whole of linguistic practice into a general theoretical mould.

Abstract

The work of L. Wittgenstein addresses a huge variety of topics. The spectrum ranges from mathematics to the analysis of ethical problems. These issues have generated many important philosophical discussions and the aim of this book is to examine a the broad range of philosophical problems. Michael Le Du investigates the relevance of the problems and solutions proposed by Wittgenstein in his philosophy of social sciences. Sabine Plaud explores the synoptic views vs. the primal phenomena in Wittgenstein on Goethe's Morphology. Eric Lemaire makes several critical remarks on Wittgenstein's anti-meaphyscial readings. Ay?egül Çakal asks what the repudiation of private language means in Wittgenstein's Philosophy. Alejandro Tomasini Bassols looks into Wittgenstein and the myth of hinge propositions. Lars Hertzberg discusses P.M.S. Hacker's point of view about Wittgenstein's meaning of "concept". Jesús Padilla Gálvez analyzes Wittgenstein's criticism against Gödel's project of metalogic.
