In A Personal History of Nuclear Medicine, Dr. Henry N. Wagner, Jr. outlines his significant contribution to the field of nuclear medicine over the past half-century, while also discussing the hurdles that the field faced in becoming a major component of modern medical practice. Further, the author explores challenges within the academic and medical establishments, which have often been known for resisting change Written for nuclear medicine professionals and non-nuclear medicine professionals alike, A Personal History of Nuclear Medicine chronicles, from the point of view of a notable pioneer in the field, the challenges and problems faced during the development of nuclear medicine and its basic philosophy over the past half century, plus its further development within medicine as it moves into the future. Dr. Henry N. Wagner, Jr. is an international authority on nuclear medicine. His pioneering work in imaging brain neuroreceptors paved the way for groundbreaking research in addiction and drug design, and increased understanding of the physiology and pathophysiology of the brain. During his 56-year association with The Johns Hopkins University, he has trained more than 500 radiologists, internists, physicians, and scientists, eight of whom have held, as he has, the position of President of the Society of Nuclear Medicine. In 1985 he was awarded the Georg Von Hevesy Award and in 1993 Dr. Wagner was awarded the first Annual Society of Nuclear Medicine President’s Award for Outstanding Contributions to nuclear medicine.

Taking both a historical and philosophical stance, Brain Imaging: The Chemistry of Mental Activity provides a detailed account of molecular imaging at its finest. Written by Dr. Henry N. Wagner Jr, a highly acclaimed author and international authority in the field of nuclear medicine, the book brings to date all the exciting work present in brain imaging, showing the differences among the various imaging modalities, and reviewing the knowledge of chemical reactions in the brain. Suitable for both professionals and the public alike; this book spans basic principles through to historical and current uses of molecular imaging. The vast utility of imaging is highlighted by examining common themes and topics prominent in human life; love, aggression, altruism, violence, crime, and substance abuse to name a few. Dr. Henry N. Wagner Jr, a pioneer in nuclear medicine, has made groundbreaking contributions to advancing the fields of radiology and nuclear medicine, namely in the areas of brain physiology and pathophysiology, and addiction and drug design. He is a member of the Institute of Medicine of the US National Academy of Sciences, as well as several editorial boards and many other medical and radiological societies, and is an honorary member of the British Institute of Radiology (2000). During his time at the Johns Hopkins University he has trained more than 500 radiologists, internists, physicians, and scientists, eight of whom have held, as he has, the position of President of the Society of Nuclear Medicine. In 1985 he was awarded the Georg Von Hevesy Award and in 1993 Dr. Wagner was awarded the first Annual Society of Nuclear Medicine President’s Award for Outstanding Contributions to nuclear medicine.

Is the world warming due to the Greenhouse Effect? Can nuclear weapon arsenals be relied upon without periodic testing? Is the world running out of oil? What action should be taken against an outbreak of foot-and-mouth or BSE? Why can't scientists provide certain answers to these and many other questions? The uncertainty of science is puzzling. It arises when scientists have more than one answer to a problem or disagree amongst themselves. In this engaging book, Henry Pollack guides the reader through the maze of contradiction and uncertainty, acquainting them with the ways that uncertainty arises in science, how scientists accommodate and make use of uncertainty, and how in the face of uncertainty they reach their conclusions. Taking examples from recent science headlines and every day life, Uncertain Science ... Uncertain World enables the reader to evaluate uncertainty from their own perspectives, and find out more about how science actually works.
