In opposition to an essentialist conceptualization, the social construct of the human body in literature can be analyzed and described by means of effective methodologies that are based on Discourse Theory, Theory of Cultural Transmission and Ecology, System Theory, and Media Theory. In this perspective, the body is perceived as a complex arrangement of substantiation, substitution, and omission depending on demands, expectations, and prohibitions of the dominant discourse network. The term Body-Dialectics stands for the attempt to decipher – and for a moment freeze – the web of such discursive arrangements that constitute the fictitious notion of the body in the framework of a specific historic environment, here in the Age of Goethe.

Mit dem vorliegenden Band steht erstmals das gesamte dramatische Werk Marie von Ebner-Eschenbachs (1830 bis 1916) zur Verfügung. Nach den bereits in dieser Reihe erschienenen vier historischen Tragödien bietet dieser Band ein vollständiges und kritisches Bild von achtzehn Dramen anhand der überlieferten Handschriften und Drucke; er schließt als verschollen geltende Dramen wie Die Schauspielerin, bisher unbekannte Einakter wie Das Bekenntniß und nie gedruckte dramatische Werke wie Das Geständnis, Mutter und Braut, Männertreue und Die Selbstsüchtigen ein. Ebner-Eschenbach verfasste zeit ihres Lebens dramatische Werke in einer Vielfalt von Gattungen, mit denen sie kreativ umging: Gesellschafts- und Künstlerdramen, Lustspiele, Einakter, dramatische Sprichwörter und Dialoge sowie ihre innovativen dialogisierten Novellen. Ebner-Eschenbachs Dramen wurden unter anderem in Wien, München, Prag, Berlin und Leipzig aufgeführt. Thematisch spiegeln sie die zeitgenössische adlige und bürgerliche Gesellschaft wider und behandeln Themen wie das weibliche und männliche Künstlerdasein, Geschlechterbeziehungen, Freundschaften, aber auch solch heikle Themen wie sexuelle Gewalt. Im Rahmen der Entstehungs- und Wirkungsgeschichte der einzelnen Dramen informiert der Band unter anderem über Pressereaktionen sowie die Rezeption in der wissenschaftlichen Literatur.
