An operator C on a Hilbert space mathcal H dilates to an operator T on a Hilbert space mathcal K if there is an isometry V:mathcal Ho mathcal K such that C= V^* TV. A main result of this paper is, for a positive integer d, the simultaneous dilation, up to a sharp factor vartheta (d), expressed as a ratio of Gamma functions for d even, of all dimes d symmetric matrices of operator norm at most one to a collection of commuting self-adjoint contraction operators on a Hilbert space.

The present volume is the first of two volumes containing a collection of original and review articles on recent advances and new directions in a multifaceted and interconnected area of mathematics and its applications. It encompasses many topics in theoretical developments in operator theory and its diverse applications in applied mathematics, physics, engineering, and other disciplines. The focus in this volume is on operator theory, linear algebra, and analytic functions. Further, a commemorative article of speeches and reminiscences dedicated to Israel Gohberg is presented.

This book expands the lectures given at IWOTA'05 (International Workshop on Operator Theory and Applications) which was held at the University of Connecticut, Storrs, USA, July 24-27, 2005. Many developments on the cutting edge of research in operator theory, matrix theory, coding theory, system theory, control theory and numerical linear algebra are reflected in this collection of original articles. The volume is of a cross-disciplinary nature. A number of papers are devoted to the analysis and algorithms for matrices with quasiseparable structure which is an active area of concurrent research in numerical linear algebra.
