In the web of cultural processes of late antiquity ablution rites and initiation rites were performed in different forms and in different contexts. Such rites existed in Early Judaism and Greco-Roman cults and were also applied in early Christianity under the label "baptism", however, not as one fixed rite uniformly performed and interpreted. Baptismal rites developed diversely corresponding to the diversity among Christian groups of which some later came to be perceived as heretical. Remains of art, architecture and texts from these contexts were discussed in two conferences gathering scholars who are excellent within their respective fields: text studies, studies of rites, archaeology, architecture, history of art, and cultural anthropology. These different fields of research have in recent years generated new knowledge that is relevant for the discussion of ablution and initiation rites and their function in late antiquity. At the same time interests of research have altered in favour of a growing cooperation across discipline borders. The present volumes are the outcome of two conferences in Rome 2008 and at Metochi (Lesbos) 2009.

The 'Euthalian apparatus' is a corpus of auxiliary texts that summarize Acts and the New Testament Letters. The material is found in a great number of Greek biblical manuscripts. Some sources identify the author as 'Euthalius, bishop of Sulci', but almost nothing is known about this figure. Vemund Blomkvist's study is based on the idea that the biblical text and the apparatus form a 'system', and that this system may be studied as a unity. The commentary shows that the different genres of the apparatus offer quite different paraphrases of the apostolic writings: The argumenta present a radicalized interpretation of Paul's theology, while the chapter titles seem to be closer to the biblical text. Together with Prof. David Hellholm, Blomkvist has published a study on the meta-terminology of the apparatus ('Paraenesis as an ancient genre-designation', 2002), also included in the present volume.

These three volumes are the results of two conferences on the Christian eucharist and its context in the traditions of sacred and communal meals; the first conference was held at the University of Kiel, the second at the University of Agder's Study Center at Metochi (Lesbos). Scholars from around the world form an international, interdisciplinary and interdenominational collaboration from various fields including History of Religion, Classics, Old and New Testament, Judaism, Patristics, Archeology, and History of Art. Images, illustrations and indexes complete the volume. The broad scope covered by these studies invites readers not only to a clearer interpretation of the origin of the Eucharist and its development in the early church, but also enables them to reach a better understanding of the religious and cultural background of sacred and communal meals in general in ancient societies.
