"This collection presents the latest scholarship on legendary Swedish filmmaker Ingmar Bergman. Appearing in the wake of Bergman’s centenary year, it combines original approaches to his films and writings with new research on established themes. Among the areas explored are Bergman’s dealings with Hollywood and the use of autobiographical writing in his later work. Several chapters look at the director’s sophisticated treatment of film music, while others offer new reflections on his interest in philosophy and psychology. There are analyses of aspects of Bergman’s most famous films, including Smiles of a Summer Night, Persona and Fanny and Alexander, as well as insightful readings of lesser-known works, such as Saraband and Sawdust and Tinsel. The book closes with two chapters that consider Bergman’s complicated relationship with Swedish politics. Assembling an international group of distinguished film scholars, Ingmar Bergman: An enduring legacy demonstrates that there is still much to be said about this intriguing filmmaker, whose name remains synonymous with the cinematic artform more than a decade after his death." -- Back cover.

Lindsay Anderson was a highly influential personality within British cinema, mostly famous for landmark films like This Sporting Life (1963) and If….(1968). This book deals primarily with hitherto unexplored aspects of his career: his biographical background in the British upper class, his devoted film criticism, and his angry relationship to contemporary society in general. Thus, the book contains, for instance, chapters about his childhood in India, his writings about John Ford, his relationship to French star Serge Reggiani, his work on TV in the 1950s, with scripts provided by blacklisted scriptwriters, his troubles with the British film establishment, and his gradually emerging concern regarding himself being Scottish, not English. The book also has some chapters written by close friends of Anderson, who died in 1994, dwelling on his penchant for controversy and quarrel, but also on his remarkable artistic talent and strong commitment.

This collection of 19 essays is the first one devoted to function-oriented analyses of intermedial interrelationships in literature, art, music, and film. The contributors - among others, Werner Wolf, James Heffernan, Walter Bernhart, Siglind Bruhn, Claus Clüver, Valerie Robillard, and Tamar Yacobi - are leading international scholars in the field of intermediality. The common basis of the essays in this volume - ranging from intermedial studies of medieval liturgical practices, early cinema, modernist art, ekphrasis, music and literature, art and literature, film and literature, hymns, and pop music, to the musical and technological aspects of Concrete poetry - is the ambition to pay attention to the cultural contexts that enhance the significance of these intermedial works and trends under examination. Since the contributions cover different types of intermedial endeavours from various periods and times, a kind of historicizing perspective is outlined. So, in pursuit of a still lacking coherent historical survey of cultural functions of intermediality, this volume might be recognized as a step towards such a Funktionsgeschichte for intermedial exploration.
Art and literature --- Congresses --- Art and music --- Intertextuality --- Music and literature
