De onverwekte trauma's als gevolg van oorlog en geweld destabiliseren de samenhang van gemeenschappen en gezinnen. Wegens gebrek aan begeleiding en psychologische bijstand loopt een ex-soldaat grote kans dat hij die onverwerkte trauma's op zijn huisgenoten afreageert. Dat is maar één van de vele pijnpunten. In short, gender was rarely considered at all. Yet with the onset of total war in the twentieth century, such a rigidly gendered approach no longer made sense, if it ever did.
