The history of flight started with the pioneer era. The introduction of mechanical controls (including hydraulics) then led to the second era. Later, with the utilization of computers and automation in aircraft, we reached the third era. Now, we are moving towards the fourth era of flight, namely Flight 4.0, which is characterized by “smart” and “connected” aircraft that extensively exploit emerging information and communication technologies. Aeronautical informatics is advancing rapidly through the synergy between information and communication technologies and aeronautics. Multi-core avionic platforms, wireless avionics networking, service-oriented architectures and IoT, data sciences and semantic infrastructures are shaping systems to come. Increasing autonomy requirements are challenging the community to investigate new ways to assure safety. Modern software engineering methodologies and real-time software techniques are altering the established development practice. Universities are starting to align their aerospace engineering and computer science curriculums in order to address this synergy. This book is a unique compilation of advancements in aeronautical informatics, introducing the changing technology landscape of flight with respect to a new push in information and communication technology.

The LNCS journal Transactions on Large-Scale Data- and Knowledge-Centered Systems focuses on data management, knowledge discovery, and knowledge processing, which are core and hot topics in computer science. Since the 1990s, the Internet has become the main driving force behind application development in all domains. An increase in the demand for resource sharing across different sites connected through networks has led to an evolution of data- and knowledge-management systems from centralized systems to decentralized systems enabling large-scale distributed applications providing high scalability. Current decentralized systems still focus on data and knowledge as their main resource. Feasibility of these systems relies basically on P2P (peer-to-peer) techniques and the support of agent systems with scaling and decentralized control. Synergy between grids, P2P systems, and agent technologies is the key to data- and knowledge-centered systems in large-scale environments. This, the 38th issue of Transactions on Large-Scale Data- and Knowledge-Centered Systems, contains extended and revised versions of six papers selected from the 68 contributions presented at the 27th International Conference on Database and Expert Systems Applications, DEXA 2016, held in Porto, Portugal, in September 2016. Topics covered include query personalization in databases, data anonymization, similarity search, computational methods for entity resolution, array-based computations in big data analysis, and pattern mining.

On behalf of the Program Committee we commend these papers to you and hope you ?nd them useful. The FoIKS symposia provide a biennial forum for presenting and discussing theoreticalandappliedresearchoninformationandknowledgesystems.Thegoal is to bring together researchers with an interest in this subject, share research experiences, promote collaboration and identify new issues and directions for future research. FoIKS 2008 solicited original contributions dealing with any foundational aspect of information and knowledge systems, including submissions from - searchersworkingin?eldssuchasdiscretemathematics, logicandalgebra, model theory,informationtheory,complexitytheory,algorithmicsandcomputation,- ometry, analysis, statistics and optimizationwho areinterested in applying their ideas, theories and methods to research on information and knowledge systems. Previous FoIKS symposia were held in Budapest (Hungary) in 2006, - enna (Austria) in 2004, Schloß Salzau near Kiel (Germany) in 2002, and Burg / Spreewald near Berlin (Germany) in 2000. FoIKS took up the tradition of the conference series Mathematical Fundamentals of Database Systems (MFDBS), which initiated East-West collaboration in the ?eld of database theory. Former MFDBS conferences were held in Rostock (Germany) in 1991, Visegrad (H- gary) in 1989, and Dresden (Germany) in 1987.
