Au début était un gigantesque nuage cosmique de gaz et de poussières, anciens débris d'étoiles géantes qui, au terme de leur vie, ont fini par exploser. Sous l'effet de la gravitation, ces poussières se sont agglutinées, ont formé des grains de plus en plus gros : gravillons, patatoïdes, planétésimaux? Ceux-ci, à leur tour, ont fusionné en masses quasi-sphériques plus importantes. C'est ainsi que naquirent les planètes, dont la Terre, il y a 4,55 milliards d'années.
