The book shows the relationships between art, the market, men, women, writers, publishers, readers and all the networks of literary dissemination in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in England. Form is intimately related to the relationships between these social phenomena. What is attempted here is a series of case studies that point to the need for more work on writing-publishing, distribution and reading practices which takes into account the nuances of the construction of a book's meaning as a cultural object in relation to other cultural objects in a field of production.

The twelve essays in this book explore in depth for the first time the publishing and reading practices which were formed and changed by the First World War. Ranging from an exploration of British and Australian trench journals and the reading practices of Indian soldiers to the impact of war on the literary figures of the home front in Britain, these essays provide crucial new historical information about the production, circulation and reception of reading matter during a period of international crisis.

This book offers new approaches to the global circulation of print culture across five centuries, ranging from Bulgaria to Brazil and from popular magazines to Shakespeare. It provocatively argues for the necessity of finding new methods and conceptual frameworks for the analysis of book history. It contains chapters which offer detailed engagement with specific instances of book production and demonstrate extensive archival research. It also includes contributions from key scholars in the field, including Sydney Shep and the publisher James Currey. The two complementary volumes - (v. 2. Perspectives from South Asia) - cover three centuries of print culture in the colonial and postcolonial worlds, providing the most comprehensive approach yet to this burgeoning combination of fields. This book is a timely publication. Where does the book belong? Does it enshrine the soul of a nation, or is it a means by which nations talk to one another, sharing ideas, technologies, texts? This book, the first in a two-volume set of original essays, responds to these questions with archive-based case studies of print culture in a number of countries around the world.
