Spanning the full career of Picasso (1881–1973), from his first cut drawings made in 1899 at nine years of age through to the 1960s with works he made in his eighties, Picasso Cut Papers features some of the artist’s most whimsical and intriguing works made on paper and in paper, alongside a select group of sculptures in metal, wood and ceramic. Although Picasso rarely sold or exhibited his cut papers (or papiers découpés) during his lifetime, he signed, dated and archived them just as he did all his works. They were simply part of a more private studio practice, often made for family or as models for his fabricators. The first publication to focus solely on Picasso’s cut papers, this book features many works reproduced for the first time with newly commissioned photography, alongside new scholarship on a little-known aspect of one of the 20th century’s most pivotal practices, which contribute to the ongoing discourse surrounding innovation and abstraction at the roots of modern art. Also featured is a photo section that surveys Picasso’s engagement with cut paper and sculpture over the decades and documents his practice of cutting paper, both in and out of the studio.

This publication is a substantial archive and a singular point of entry into thinking with and understanding Andrea Fraser's work and reception. The interview format provides intimate insight into Fraser's self-positioning as a central aspect of her practice. By presenting the artist's voice as mediated through interlocutors ranging from professional peers to popular media, 'Collected Interviews, 1990-2018' uniquely contextualizes Fraser's practice in the artistic, institutional, and discursive fields in which she intervenes. As Fraser is engaged, challenged, and understood from diverse perspectives, readers learn as much about her artistic commitments from the artist's humor and affect as from her incisive analyses. The collection spans three decades, from the early 1990s to the present, and is organized chronologically with minimal editing. The collection's unmediated format allows Fraser's key ideas and themes to attain deeper resonance through repetitions and subtle differentiations over multiple conversations.

Poet, novelist, playwright and critic Victor Hugo (1802-1885) was a preeminent figure in the social, political and cultural life of 19th-century France. One of the greatest writers of all time, he was also an accomplished draftsman and produced a lesser known but remarkable body of works on paper. Hugo's drawing practice was largely a private endeavor and although over 3,000 sheets by him survive today, they were rarely seen in public during his lifetime. Many were produced during his extended exile on the Channel Islands of Jersey and Guernsey between 1852 and 1870. The sole American museum exhibition devoted to his graphic work to date was organized by the Drawing Center in New York in 1998. The Hammer Museum's exhibition will reconsider Hugo's experimental and enigmatic practice as a visual artist for a new generation of audiences in America.--Hammer Museum.

"Filled with beautiful photographs and informative essays, this volume presents the genius of A. Quincy Jones, whose collaborative nature provides a timely example for today's architects. While the architect A. Quincy Jones is most recognized for his glamorous homes for Los Angeles's cultural elite, he was equally dedicated to postwar Southern California's rapidly expanding middle class. As this fascinating book reveals, Jones and his collaborators were truly ahead of their time. Their vision of creating affordable, aesthetically pleasing structures prefigured the advent of several important architectural trends, such as sustainable building designs, maximization of available space, and sensitive site planning. Filled with images by noted photographer Jason Schmidt, as well as period photographs by Julius Shulman and others, this volume looks at every aspect of Jones's career. Original drawings, models, and furniture designs from the architect's personal archives illustrate a wide variety of projects featuring the hallmarks of Jones's style: soaring interior spaces, the blurring of indoors and out, laminated timber construction, angled walls, and innovative use of concrete, redwood, and glass. Essays explore Jones's quintessentially collaborative nature as he consulted with other noted architects, landscapers, interior designers, developers, and city planners to create buildings of lasting beauty and importance"--
