Afro-Amerikaanse meisjes en Latina's vormen een beetje een vergeten groep binnen de Amerikaanse academische onderzoekswereld. Zij ondervinden in verhouding tot andere etnische groepen meer effecten van een gebrekkig onderwijsbeleid. De media, met hun eerder negatieve stereotiepe beeldvorming, beïnvloeden hun zelfbeeld. Op school botsen ze dan weer met een beeldvorming die volgens de auteurs nog te veel vertrekt vanuit een wit, middenklasse perspectief. Veel meisjes wijken in hun gedrag in de klas hiervan af. Sommige leraren ervaren dit gedrag als ongepast en vijandig. Dit alles draagt niet bij tot een goede pedagogische relatie. In dit boek vertellen de meisjes zelf hoe ze hiermee omgaan.
