Every age has its utopias. The grand social drafts of the past century, their demands and impacts in terms of real history, however, have aroused suspicions of the utopia being a naive and perilous hubris. And yet the radical concepts of Le Corbusier and Frank Lloyd Wrights initially displayed an anticipative force and rationality that - with almost fifty years of success worldwide - can hardly be seen as a mistake. "Latent Utopias" features experimental architectural projects both by established and up-and-coming architects. The projects are characterised by radical abstraction and strangeness. But what is the hidden meaning of these experiments? How does this "Neo-Avantgarde" relate itself to the historical Avantgarde, and what is its stance on the idea of progress? Contrary to first appearances is there still utopian potential?

"Total Fluidity" collects 10 years of academic design research conducted at the Zaha Hadid master-class at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. Under the leadership of Zaha Hadid and Patrik Schumacher the studio developed a distinct contribution to the emerging style of Parametricism. All elements of architecture become fluid, ready to engage with each other and with divers contexts leading to an overall intensification of relations. This style is architecture's response to 21st Century network society. The radicality and consistency with which this style is being pursued across all scales and programmes results in an impressive body of work. Academic design research can go deeper and farther than professional work in probing the consequences of a radical design hypothesis. Within academia architects can be more experimental. They can afford to be more principled and more self-critical, avoiding pragmatic compromises. The creative work of the Zaha Hadid Vienna studio testifies to this.

Une réflexion en images, en corps, en mouvement, sur l'au-delà de la mégapole: la métapole. «Face au développement endémique des péri-urbanisations sous forme de banlieues, écrit l'architecte Olivier Bastin (1) ["] des théories émergent qui tendent à positiver ces développements anarchiques, en les sérialisant sous le vocable de l'hybridation, une sorte de voie ouverte à tous les devenirs». Les références (de Leonard de Vinci au cubo-futurisme, en passant par le Monde nouveau, fresque de Giandomenico Tiepolo), le propos chorégraphique, les architectures de Zaha Hadid, les nouvelles technologies (notamment le procédé du blue screen, utilisé en télé pour les bulletins météo), les lumières et leur graphisme: tous ces éléments se mêlent plutôt joyeusement.
