"Im Frühjahr 1900 unternahm eine Gruppe deutscher Wissenschaftler eine Expedition in das Gebiet zwischen dem ersten und zweiten Nilkatarakt im heutigen Sudan. Der 26-jahrige klassische Archaologe Hermann Thiersch (1874 - 1939), späterer Ordinarius und Rektor der Universität Göttingen, war mit von der Partie und hielt in einem Reisetagebuch und zahlreichen Skizzen seine Eindrücke dieser Nubienexpedition fest. Mit den beteiligten Ägyptologen studierte er die archäologischen Hinterlassenschaften der Grenzfestungen des alten Ägypten. Noch grösseres Augenmerk widmete er aber den Gefahren und Beschwerlichkeiten der abenteuerlichen Reise, dem Alltagsleben der nubischen Bevölkerung und der Kulturgeschichte dieser jahrtausendealten Grenzregion zwischen Ägypten und Zentralafrika, die heute unwiederbringlich in den Fluten des Nasserstausees versunken ist"--Page 4 of cover.

Ce livre porte sur les conflits autour de l'héritage dans le monde européen de l'Antiquité à la fin du Moyen Âge. Il traite des règles de l'héritage et de la division des propriétés en Grèce ancienne, dans les Empires romain et byzantin, certains royaumes latins et l'Egypte musulmane, au temps des Mameloukes. Les sources mises à contribution dans ce livre sont diverses : sources documentaires, inscriptions, papyri et manuscrits fournissant pétitions et testaments, mais aussi des sources littéraires, des jugements rendus et des codes de lois. Le livre se concentre sur l'impact que les religions ont eu sur le droit familial et la transmission des biens, et offre une appréciation du phénomène pour la religion gréco-romaine, le judaïsme, le christianisme et l'islam. Il aborde finalement la question du traitement inégal des genres dans le monde la Méditerranée antique et médiévale. "This book is about conflicts over inheritance in the Ancient and Mediaeval Worlds. It deals with rules of inheritance and property division in ancient Greece, in the Roman and Byzantine Empires, in some Latin kingdoms and in mediaeval Islamic Egypt. The sources drawn upon for this book are varied: documentary sources, such as inscriptions, papyri and manuscripts containing petitions and wills, but also literary sources, legal documents and law codes. The book focuses on the impact religions had on family law and property transmission and offers insight on Greco-Roman religion, Judaism, Christianity and Islam. It deals with gender inequality in the Ancient and Mediaeval Mediterranean world.

The last forty years of research have cast new light on the lives of ancient Mediterranean women in the penumbra of our patriarchal sources, including the pervasive risks they faced in becoming mothers. Current demographic models suggest that perhaps as many as one in five children would have lost their mothers by age ten. The inescapable conclusion is that the absence of ancient mothers is not merely an artifact of bias in our sources, but also a fundamental condition of antiquity, with profound implications for ancient family life and the experience of childhood. 'Missing Mothers: Maternal Absence in Antiquity' is the first volume dedicated to studying mother absence as an integrated phenomenon in the ancient Mediterranean, from its obvious manifestation as total absence in the wake of maternal death, to the partial absences of maternal separation brought about by economic necessity, divorce, slavery, social conventions, and occasionally choice. The fifteen essays collected here explore the gaps left by absent mothers and how individuals, families, and societies in the ancient Mediterranean conceptualized, represented, and responded to those gaps, practically, psychologically, artistically, and politically between the 5th century BCE and late antiquity
