Abstract

This volume revisits the “long 19th century” in the Middle East from the perspective of emerging subjectivity as a fundamentally new attitude of the individual vis-à-vis the World. Stephan Guth’s holistic vision interprets emerging subjectivity as the key operator at the heart of the many aspects of the so-called Arab(ic) “Renaissance” (and corresponding movements in Turkish), like rationalism, critical analysis, political emancipation, reformism, moralism, and emotionalism, but also a new language, new genres, and new concepts. Guth’s thoroughly philological approach demonstrates how a close reading of literary texts from the period, a cultural-psychological interpretation of linguistic phenomena and an etymology-informed look into conceptual terminology can contribute to a deeper understanding of what “modernisation” actually meant, deep inside the human beings’ mind and psyche, in their meeting with a rapidly changing world. Twenty essays on language, literature, and key concepts reflect the author’s life-long engagement with the culture of the period in question. The articles are glued together by a guiding narrative that assigns each treated aspect its place in the author’s vision (which includes a global perspective).

Abstract

Arabic Literature in a Posthuman World explores Arabic literary production after the so-called ?Arab Spring?. 23 specialists of modern Arabic literature analyze the many ways in which contemporary Arab authors view and comment on a world that is dramatically changing and disintegrating, a world full of violent conflict, social instability, ideological vacuum and political collapse where there does not seem to be any place for humanity any more. The spread of new technologies and media added, this world not only appears inhumane, but also posthuman, a world of monstrosity in which mankind no longer controls its own destiny. Authors react to this with a writing of a new quality that makes the old humanist project of an Arab nah?a appear as a failed utopia.0A first section focuses on the increased interest that authors assign to the past as a shaper of the present. The other sections highlight the many subversive techniques with which the writers try to reassert humanity against the overall trend of de-humanization. The spectrum spans from ?Contested Spaces over Science Fiction and Dystopia? and methods of ?Countering/Resisting Fragmentation?, ?Dispersal?, ?Loss?, ?Oblivion?, to ?Satire and Rap?. The volume is the first to explore what Ihab Hassan?s term posthuman(ism), widely debated only in and for Western contexts so far, may mean in other parts of the world.

Abstract

This festschrift in honor of historian of philosophy and Islamic studies scholar Anke von Kügelgen reflects her overarching research interest in the "knowledge cultures of Muslim societies." It presents contributions on individual philosophers, metaphilosophy, and religious critique in the context of the Islamic world, and on Muslim Central Asia, the transformations that have taken place in Middle Eastern societies, and historical sources.
