Abstract

This book addresses the enormous global challenge of providing balanced and sustainable solutions to urgent water problems. The author explores our dependence on access to safe water and other water-related services and how driving forces of the human and natural worlds are degrading this access. The greatest challenges involve conflicts between people and interest groups across all countries, as well as the economic and political difficulties in finding solutions through infrastructure development. The book takes an interdisciplinary approach to Integrated Water Resources Management or IWRM, which provides a set of tools for policy development, planning and organization, assessment, systems analysis, finance, and regulation. The author suggests that IWRM is challenging because of the human element, but that no other process can reconcile the conflicting agendas involved with water management. The broad range of topics covered here, as well as 25 case summaries, will be of interest to scientists, engineers, practitioners, and advanced level students interested in the integrated management of water as a resource. Neil S. Grigg is a Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Colorado State University, USA, where he teaches a course on water resources management. He has also held positions as a department head, government environmental official, and consulting engineer, as well as military officer in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Abstract

A comprehensive look at the emergence of infrastructure finance Just as infrastructure development acts as a catalyst for economic growth, it is also changing the landscape for potential investors and the burgeoning field of infrastructure finance. Infrastructure systems for transportation, utilities, and public works are essential for economic growth and have quickly developed into an emerging alternative asset class. Infrastructure Finance examines how the activities associated with updating and creating efficient transportation and communications, reliable and affor

Abstract

Civil engineers who design, construct, or manage infrastructure or environmental systems often find themselves facing decisions that involve factors outside technical and engineering requirements: Can a transportation system be made more sustainable? How can we balance environmental demands with available financing? How can priorities for building and repairing water systems be established in light of limited resources? Economics and Finance for Engineers and Planners: Managing Infrastructure and Natural Resources presents the core issues of economics and finance that relate directly to the work of civil engineers, construction managers, and public works and utility officials. This book answers the practical questions that confront engineers involved in infrastructure, natural resources, and the environment. It explains the economic forces, reviews financial methods, and offers the management tools necessary for civil and environmental engineers to be successful. This book will be an invaluable resource for civil and environmental engineers, construction managers, public works and utility officials, and anyone involved in the economics and finance of planning and management.

Abstract

"Water Resources Management is the process of planning, developing, and managing water resources, in terms of both water quantity and quality, across all water uses. It includes the institutions, infrastructure, incentives, and information systems that support and guide water management. Water resources management seeks to harness the benefits of water by ensuring there is sufficient water of adequate quality for drinking water and sanitation services, food production, energy generation, inland water transport, and water-based recreational, as well as sustaining healthy water-dependent ecosystems and protecting the aesthetic and spiritual values of lakes, rivers, and estuaries. Water resource management also entails managing water-related risks, including floods, drought, and contamination. The complexity of relationships between water and households, economies, and ecosystems, requires integrated management that accounts for the synergies and tradeoffs of water's great number uses and values"

Abstract

A detailed look at the water industry and the trends that can lead to investment opportunities Water has quickly grown into a big global business, with annual revenues in the United States alone reaching over 200 billion. In the years ahead, companies as well as governments must find innovative ways to address important issues within this field without sacrificing basic needs, such as safety of drinking water or the reliability of water for energy production. Nobody understands this better than author Neil Grigg, a forty-year veteran of the water industry, and now, with Water Fina
