Abstract

Nowadays, we are living in a world with 7.6 billion inhabitants. The world has seen his population grow by one billion over the last decade and is excepted to reach slightly less than 10 billion inhabitants by the year 2050. This global increase of the world’s population that we are witnessing is accompanied by another phenomenon: the urbanization increase. In 1990 43 percent of the world’s population lived in urban areas and this figure is expected to reach 66 percent in 2050 (United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, 2014). It is essential to note that cities are responsible for between 60 and 80 percent of the world’s energy consumption and generate more or less than 70 percent of the human-induced greenhouse gas emissions (United Nations Human Settlements Programme, 2016). This massive and fast urbanization and its associated issues (environmental ones but also the ones that concern citizens’ quality of life) lead to an urgent need to find new ways to think and manage cities. One way to do so is through the development of smart cities.
The objective of this thesis is to fill the research gap existing in the smart city literature in order to bring a clear definition out, taking into account the dimensions of such city, as well as the needs and expectations of citizens, all of this in order to establish the main trends and better understand the concept.
The thesis and its associated survey taught us that the smart city concept is a recent concept that is still at its early stages and that is rapidly evolving. Moreover, its potential benefits are vast in regards with sustainable city developments. However, some security concerns exist regarding this concept and cannot be set apart. The survey taught us that a vast majority of citizens are not aware of the smart city concept but are willing to see such a project being developed in the region where they live when they are given a definition of the concept. The results of this survey led to marketing recommendations. Indeed, a marketing and communication strategy should be implemented in order to better inform citizens about smart cities that would include the potential benefits of such initiative, the actual cost of implementation (that tends to be over-evaluated by respondents), etc. Moreover, the results of the survey give an overview of which smart initiatives citizens are willing to see in their living environment.
