Offices play an increasing part in the economic and social development of cities and regins. The location of offices, in central meopolitan areas or in peripheral regions, has a considerable effect on employment patterns and on the flow of commuters and must therefore be subject to public policy. Dr. Goddard reviews recent advances in the theoretical understanding of office location; he also traces the development of public and private policy on office activities. The interaction between theoretical research and policy-making is discussed and here the role of information exchange through personal contact is stressed both in explaining the concentration of offices in metropolitan centres and in assessing the possibilities of further decentralization opened up by advances in telecommunication. The book will be useful for students of economic and urban geography, planning, and regional development as well as for practising planners at the local, regional, and national levels , and for administrative managers in business organizations.
