Abstract

The Ethiopian Orthodox Church’s Tradition on the Holy Cross is a volume that combines both ancient and derived Ethiopic literature on the Cross. The work brings together all the major sources from manuscripts preserved in different monasteries and edited and translated into English. The sources include homilies by Minas bishop of Aksum, John Chrysostom, James of Sarug, as well as a number of anonymous authors, all translated from Greek during the Aksumite era. The derived literature includes works by the famous men of the pen, including the fifteenth-century Abba Giyorgis of Sägla and Emperor Zär’a Ya‘ǝqob. Poetic hymns to the Cross constitute a part of the collection, one of these being glorification of the Cross by Abba Baḥrǝy, author of several important works.

Abstract

This volume contains eight Amharic texts of various genres and length critically edited, translated, and annotated by Getatchew Haile. The texts are taken from manuscripts of the Ethiopian Manuscript Microfilm Library, at the Hill Museum and Manuscript Library, Collegeville, MN (7007 and 7650), and of the British Library, London (Or. 16223), and are representative of the genuine tradition of teaching and interpretation of the Ethiopian Orthodox Täwaḥǝdo Church. The anthology includes commentaries of prayers and confessions of faiths, Christian oriental legends, and theological treatises. It is an essential collection of documents for the study of early Amharic literature and Old Amharic language and orthographical practices.

Abstract

Voices from Dabra Zamaddo" presents three major sources on the history of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church and its monasticism: two hagiographical histories (gadlat), one of Abba Bartalomewos and one of Abba Yohannes, founders of the famous monastery in Lasta, Wallo, and a collection of forty-five miracles of Mary worked in Dabra Zamaddu and the surrounding region. The sources testify to the monastery's spiritual impact on the local population and to its share of the sufferings inflicted by the sixteenth-century revolt and invasion of the Islamic forces of Iman Ahmad from the east, and by the overwhelming Oromo migration from the south. As narrated in the gadlat, the story of how the monastery's manuscripts escaped these devastations despite a lack of protection is a miracle indeed. A number of the miracles of Mary contained here can be traced to other sources or are repeat miracles told in the two gadlat. The majority, however, are unique and of high historical value. Only these miracles contain, for example, the information that the region around the monastery was in total darkness for days due to extraordinarily severe weather during that time. The sources are edited, translated, and commented upon by Getatchew Haile, who has relied on his decades long study of Ge'ez and Amharic manuscripts and the resulting expertise to supply the translations with the necessary annotations.
