Bringing together scholars from around the world to research the intersection between media and disability, this edited collection aims to offer an interdisciplinary exploration and critique of print, broadcast and online representations of physical and mental impairments. Drawing on a wide range of case studies addressing how people can be ‘othered’ in contemporary media, the chapters focus on analyses of hateful discourses about disability on Reddit, news coverage of disability and education, media access of individuals with disabilities, the logic of memes and brain tumour on Twitter, celebrity and Down Syndrome on Instagram, disability in TV drama, the metaphor of disability for the nation ; as well as an autoethnography of treatment of breast cancer. Providing a much-needed global perspective, Disability, Media, and Representations examines the relationship between self-representation and representations in either reinforcing or debunking myths around disability, and ways in which academic discourse can be differently articulated to study the relationship between media and disability.This book will be of interest to students and researchers of disability studies and media studies as well as activists and readers engaged in debates on diversity, inclusivity and the media

This book explains what it means to teach journalism in countries with limited media freedom in the post-pandemic era. It digs into the social and historical factors underpinning the development of journalism university degrees and courses in a selection of case studies taken from Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America. This work assesses both the limitations and creative opportunities arising from teaching journalism under constraints. Topics include, but are not limited to, the following: the application of Western theoretical frameworks in new transnational universities in China; the historical and political roots of the gap between industry and academia in Slovenia; ideological clashes and classism in higher education in the Arab region; scholar-activism in Turkey; decolonizing journalism curricula in South Asia; journalism students as research partners in the Philippines; and the repression of the student press in Mexico. Although this book focuses broadly on the Global South, the theoretical and practical implications of its findings and related discussion will inform the challenges facing journalism training today as a whole. Diana Garrisi is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Media and Communication, Xi'an Jiaotong - Liverpool University, China, and a Fellow of the Higher Education Association (HEA). She has published in international peer-reviewed journals including Journalism Studies, Early Popular Visual Culture, Media Practice and Education, and Public Understanding of Science. She is co-editor of Disability, Media, and Representations: Other Bodies (2020). Xianwen Kuang (PhD in Journalism, University of Southern Denmark) is an Associate Professor at the Department of Media and Communication, Xi'an Jiaotong - Liverpool University, China and a Fellow of the Higher Education Association (HEA). He has published articles in international peer-reviewed journals, including Journalism, International Journal of Communication, Problems of Post-Communism, Global Media and China, and The China Quarterly.

"The portrayal of disfigurement in the UK media must change. This policy brief is based on recent research that found a general negative and sensationalised attitude towards disfigurement in the media. Disfigurement is a condition that can affect anyone at any time in life regardless their social or demographic background due to accidents or health conditions or be congenital. In the UK, one in 111 people have facial disfigurements. In order to improve the ways in which media portray disfigurement, this policy brief argues that media should move away from sensationalised coverage on disfigurement and focus instead on the lived experiences of individuals with this condition. It recommends strengthening diversity-oriented editorial practices and training as well as media literacy education. In addition, it addresses the lack of guidelines on the portrayal of disfigurement and urges regulatory bodies to be more efficient in handling complaints."
