The book aims to evaluate the criteria and hypotheses used in the description of American Spanish. While the usual thing is to replicate concepts and methods used in other places and abstract the phenomena of the environment, here contributions are gathered that discuss and point out what are the demands that the Spanish-American reality imposes on the researcher and how those demands influence the theoretical and methodological premises that guide the investigation. The articles focus on three main points: the influence of contact in the configuration of American Spanish or one of its varieties; the pragmatic evidence of pluricentrism; and, the registration of the variation.
