Abstract

This book offers a comprehensive guide to the use of glaucoma drainage devices (GDDs) in various clinical settings, and covers aspects ranging from the basics to managing complications. The aim of this work is to provide readers with a practical go-to desktop book to assist in and enhance their surgical competence with glaucoma drainage devices. Starting with the history of GDDs, it addresses various devices, their models and modifications, and highlights their advantages and disadvantages through numerous illustrations. The indications for the drainage devices are discussed in detail, using patient cases with photographs. The book describes the techniques for all devices in detail, which are explained further in accompanying videos. After covering the basic techniques, the book provides extensive notes on modifications that may be required in various case presentations such as congenital glaucoma, post-penetrating keratoplasty with extensive peripheral synechiae, and procedure through pars plans etc. Complications and their management are subsequently addressed. The book is an essential guide to help surgeons match patients to the most suitable device, and to support patients from preparation through post-operative care. Primarily intended for glaucoma surgeons, it offers a valuable resource for fellows in training, and all who have an interest in glaucoma surgery.

Abstract

This book covers interpretation of visual fields by Humphrey and Octopus perimeters and discussion of Humphrey visual fields in a variety of ocular disorders. It examines dilemmas faced by an ophthalmologist while evaluating visual fields which do not match with the clinical picture. Glaucoma, the commonest condition for visual field investigation is discussed in detail. Logical reasoningfor incorporating perimetry in glaucoma management with a clear understanding of the challenges in its interpretation is delved into. The book progresses to advanced glaucoma and glaucoma progression. It discusses a systematic evaluation of various parts of the visual field so that the reader can make a calculated management plan for their patient. Each chapter attempts to clearly enunciate factors that help in the diagnosis and features which may be confused with other conditions. Fields which help diagnosing early, advanced glaucoma and glaucoma progression with images and methods of ensuring reasonable diagnostic accuracy are included. The book incorporates separate chapters on ocular conditions which also mimic visual field defects of glaucoma with detailed modes of correct diagnosis, diagnostic dilemmas arising from retinal, macular, vascular, visual pathway lesions mimicking visual field defects of glaucoma or while coexisting with glaucoma, supported by algorithms to achieve a quick diagnosis in a busy OPD without missing the clinical findings and by using minimal investigative modalities. This book helps clinicians to prevent over diagnosis or under diagnosis of glaucoma and helps diagnose cases with morbidities causing visual field defects.

Abstract

What is women's empowerment, and how and why does it matter for women's health? These are questions that the University of California Global Health Institute's (UCGHI) Center of Expertise (COE) on Women's Health, Gender, and Empowerment aimed to answer with this book. Since 2009 the COE has brought together a multidisciplinary network of experts from across the University of California (UC) campuses and departments, along with their global partners, to advance research and education on what has become a capstone theme in the global health and development agenda: women's and girls' empowerment and health. Women's Empowerment and Global Health demonstrates the outcomes of COE's commitment to advance pedagogy and present the work of thought leaders in this domain. Despite the rise of a human rights-based approach to health and increasing awareness of the synergies between women's health and empowerment, a lack of consensus remains as to how to operationalize empowerment in ways that improve health. Women's Empowerment and Global Health presents thirteen multidisciplinary case studies that demonstrate how science and advocacy can be creatively merged to enhance the agency and status of girls and women. The book is organized into two sections, the first focused on sociocultural, educational, and health systems interventions, and the second on economic, policy, and structural interventions. Seven of the chapters are enriched by complementary videos that provide readers with context about programs in India, Kenya, the United States, Mexico, Nicaragua, Zimbabwe, and South Africa. Women's Empowerment and Global Health provides the next generation of researchers and practitioners, as well as students in global and public health, sociology, anthropology, women's studies, law, business, and medicine, with cutting-edge and inspirational examples of programs that point the way toward achieving women's equality and the positive outcome of empowerment on health.
