Abstract

Abstract

The purpose of this work is to analyze the construction of the female world in contemporary Argentine cinematographic production. The scene of Argentine cinema has witness, in the recent years, a raise in the participation of women both in front and behind the camera. This phenomenon takes place in a context of growth of the women’s movement as well as an increase in the presence of feminists claims and ideas in the public agenda. Considering this scenario, this work analyses the complex and contradictory elements that form the female characters and their relations in the movies Alanis (2017) by Anahí Berneri and Desearás al hombre de tu hermana (2017) by Diego Kaplan. Resorting to the important tradition of feminist film studies, we focus on the concepts of cinema as a technology of gender and the formation of the gaze as well as on the importance of affect and emotion in relation to the female experience. The articulation that the movies establish with the genres that they inscribe themselves in, the use of formal devices such as the position of the camera or the lighting design, the construction of the look as well as the forms of address to the viewer will guide the examination of the filmic material. Moreover, they will allow a comparative dimension between the two films. Similarly, the identification of the relations, explicit or not, that the movies establish with other cinematographic productions will enable us to present a richer perspective on the possible readings that the films allow. In dialogue with the various discourses that circulate in the present on women, we attempt to discuss the problems of female agency, desire and sexuality, and identify the emergent images, languages and aesthetics that might be present in the chosen movies.

Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to show that there is a connection between the way that the figure of the revolutionary activist from the 1970s is represented in contemporary Argentine cinema and the growing women’s movement that has emerged in the country over the past years. Throughout the history of films portraying the last dictatorship (1976-1983) and the years preceding it, the role of the female characters has generally been to embody the suffering innocent victim, as can be seen in the famous La noche de los lápices (1986) and Garage Olimpo (1999). In contemporary productions, however, the victimhood is obliterated in the construction of the female characters. The new figures are instead characterized by their political engagement, ideological convictions and, in some cases, by the perpetration of violence. The main corpus that this thesis will work with is composed by movies from the last decade that are set in the 1970s and have female activists in important roles: Infancia clandestina (2012), Pasaje de vida (2015) and Sinfonía para Ana (2017). The first objective of this work is to analyze the films and to identify their characteristic features. The second objective is to put our study of the movies in dialogue with other concomitant texts that also address the issue of female political subjectivity.
