Saul Leiter has been digging in his archive and selected 34 unpublished color photographs for his fourth solo exhibition at Roger Szmulewicz's GALLERY FIFTY ONE, in Antwerp. The lyricism and intensity of his vision come into fullest play in his eloquent handling of color: to the rapid recording of the spontaneous unfolding of life on the street, Leiter adds an unconventional sense of form and a brilliantly improvisational, and frequently almost abstract, use of found colors and tones. Leiter’s visual language of fragmentation, ambiguity and contingency is evoked in Saul Leiter: Early Color by one hundred subtle, painterly images that stretched the boundaries of photography in the second half of the twentieth-century.

In this 2nd volume on cactus derivatives and plant drawings, Dirk Zoete continues his imaginary botanical journey. While some shapes and forms are reminiscent of the first part of this series, the use of color is notably different, with some shades appearing more intense. Zoete also focuses more on the background, creating an even more dreamlike universe, with a sense of depth and dimensionality that feels like an extra sensory playground.

As the title states, this book is not about cars. The automobiles only function as a leitmotif to guide the viewer through Gruyaert’s varied oeuvre, which is characterised by a cinematographic way of framing and a sensitive treatment of colour, form and light. Gruyaert decided in the second half of the 1970s as one of the first photographers in Europe to commit himself entirely to colour photography. His cinematographic background inflicted on him an aesthetic conception of photography. Gruyaert’s images are simply snapshots of magical moments in which different visual elements, primarily colour, form, light and movement, spontaneously come together in front of his lens. His bold, saturated tonalities are autonomous elements that grant structure and depth to the composition.
