Abstract

This book presents a selection of empirical papers dealing with second and multiple language acquisition, in which qualitative research methodology is employed. Each of the studies reported in individual chapters is based on a solid theoretical background and an overview of studies in a given area. Although the main focus is on qualitative methods, some of the papers demonstrate the complementarity of quantitative and qualitative approaches in studying language acquisition.

Abstract

This book introduces readers to the principles of a fairly new branch of psychology – positive psychology – and demonstrates how they can be applied in the context of second language acquisition in a natural environment and in instructed foreign language (FL) learning. It focuses both on the well-being and success of the learner and the professional and personal well-being of the teacher. Further, the book stresses the importance of the positive emotions and character strengths of those involved in the process of language learning and teaching, as well as the significant role played by enabling institutions such as school and, at the micro-level, individual FL classes.

Abstract

The study contains theoretical and practical considerations on motivation in foreign language education presented by the authors from the perspective of both the teacher and the learner in various age groups, at different levels of proficiency, thus in diverse contexts of language education: school and university courses as well as teacher training programmes. The content has been divided into three topical parts covering the idea of motivation and motivational factors in glottodidactics, motivation in various educational contexts and the use of new technology in the development of motivation in practice. The selection will inspire the reader to reflect on what motivation is, what factors it is influenced by and what role the foreign language teacher plays in its development.

Abstract

The book is a collection of articles devoted to the situation of contemporary glottodidactics, with particular emphasis on the pandemic conditions. The analyses concern the pressures to which the teacher is subjected and the strategies for coping with them; the attitudes of students and lecturers towards the challenges created by distance education; affective issues related to the lack of authentic social contacts, the instructor immediacy, as well as affective barriers in foreign language communication caused by language anxiety. The book also addresses such issues as limitations in the development of communicative language competence; key competences; verification of learning outcomes; professional training of translators and new opportunities created by the use of communicators; educational platforms; MOOCs; digital tools or traditional textbooks, as well as opportunities arising from the application of neurodidactic principles in educational practice or an open-minded attitude in the demanding CLIL education.

Abstract

The volume offers a collection of the most recent research coming from scholars and practitioners in the field of multilingualism research in various contexts of natural/immersion environments, school/formal instruction, grounded in multilingual societies and individual multilinguality of semi-monolingual countries. The studies included in the book constitute an exemplification of new methods of research used (e.g., narratives, visualizations, metaphors) as well as new approaches to multilingualism (affordances, dominant language constellations). The volume is divided into four parts: Part One focuses on different dimensions of multilingualism, Part Two zooms in on the concept of affordances and their role in the development of multilingual competence, Part Three concentrates on dominant language constellations in different contexts and, finally, Part Four shifts the focus to instructional practices in teaching multiple languages. .
