Abstract

"In many ways, this textbook mirrors the development of the field of cardiac device placement and management. The original version of this text was written by Drs. Seymour Furman, David Hayes, and David Holmes, pioneers and founders of interventional electrophysiology and device management. The goals of the present text remain similar to the original intent, that is, to provide a relatable, practical approach without ignoring the rigors of fundamental principles while retaining the flexibility in the professional's mind to embrace new technology. Updates on resynchronization therapy, subcutaneous defibrillators, leadless devices, and improvements in lead extraction have been included in this text. We continue to stay away from an encyclopedic approach but rather focus on a usable, practical, and intuitive approach for problem solving in the day-to-day practice of a cardiac electrophysiology professional. As with all prior editions, we owe a great debt of gratitude to all the contributors who have tirelessly updated their sections and have done multiple revisions. We also have to thank our patients and nursing staff who provide us with material to allow us to learn to a point where we can try and teach troubleshooting approaches, etc. We received tremendous support from various device manufacturers, their engineers, and their published data material. These include assistance from Biotronik, Boston Scientific, Medtronic, and Abbott Medical"--

Abstract

The past decade has witnessed an explosion of knowledge and radical changes in our understanding of the molecular, ionic, genetic, and pharmacologic basis of electrical diseases of the heart. Electrical diseases of the heart are heritable arrhythmogenic clinical entities that may share common clinical and genetic features, yet may be distinctly different in their genesis, prognosis, and management. Notably, both congenital and acquired electrical diseases of the heart are receiving increased recognition as a result of important advances in genetic analysis. Electrical Diseases of the Heart is a thorough clinical reference on the current status of cardiac electrophysiological disease, emphasizing common and diverse clinical features. The latest developments in the field of experimental and clinical cardiac electrophysiology, genetics, pharmacology, and interventional therapies of various clinical arrhythmogenic entities are featured and discussed in terms of recent advances in basic and clinical science. Residents, fellows, and physicians in cardiology and electrophysiology will gain valuable insight into cardiac electrophysiology and clinical electrocardiology by reading this book, including expert review of the genetic and epidemiologic considerations, diagnostic and therapeutic modalities of the newly discovered clinical syndromes, and electrocardiographic phenomena, and their correlation with the most recent advances in the basic science.

Abstract

This book explores the history of the Mayo Clinic Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory from 1940 to present day. It examines the life and journey of the Cardiac Catheterization Lab and its ultimate success in implementing the vision of the Mayo philosophy of emphasizing collaboration between lab-based scientists and clinical health care professionals to bring innovation to the clinical practice and lead landmark changes in the practice of medicine profoundly enhancing what we can offer to patients and society alike. The book is divided into decades, with separate sections in each decade on key cardiology topics such as congenital heart disease, coronary heart disease, hemodynamics, pacing, and electrophysiology (EP). Chapters will highlight training, advances, new procedures, new technologies, and fundamental changes to the field throughout the decades, attributed to the work done by Cath lab personnel. Chapters also identify the problems faced, the unmet clinical needs of patients and society, problems solved, and things learned and transmitted into the clinical arena along the way. The Mayo Clinic Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory will be a valuable resource for health care professionals, clinicians, scientists, innovators, administrators, and small and large device manufacturing companies as well as historians and past and present patients. .
