Abstract

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a chronic and progressive disease that affects as many as one million people in the United States alone. Although many patients and families are aware of the physical challenges that accompany Parkinson's disease, few are prepared to deal with the common behavioral issues that impact their quality of life. Behavior problems in PD are not always catastrophic, but they are common. It is estimated that 65-90% of PD patients experience some level of depression, anxiety, dementia, hallucinations, paranoid delusions, sleep disorders, and other behavioral disorders that af

Abstract

Psychosis affects nearly 50% of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). It is a major therapeutic challenge, as a balance needs to be found between the PD medications that can exacerbate psychotic symptoms and the antipsychotics that may worsen motor function. Focusing on the most common side effects of PD medications, namely visual hallucinations and delusions, this highly readable handbook will increase readers' awareness of: • the various presentations of psychosis in PD • modifiable risk factors • prescribing that balances the benefits and potential harms. Detailed case studies and evidence-based guidance for practical application make 'Fast Facts: Psychosis in Parkinson's Disease' an invaluable resource for all healthcare professionals responsible for the outpatient care of patients with PD, including neurologists, psychiatrists, geriatricians, psychiatric nurse practitioners, specialist PD nurses and primary care providers.

Abstract

This book explores the paint-making process and the varying effects produced by different formulations, finishes and painting methods, and examines the ways by which these evolved. Through a wealth of illustrations and in-depth analysis, the book provides a history of colour in painted decoration, revealing how the generally muted colours gave way to the lighter, brighter palette of the late 18th century, the strong, intense shades of the Regency period, the rich polychrome of the Victorian era and the unprecedented diversity and eclecticism of the twentieth century, culminating in the explosion of interest in historic or traditional colours today.

Abstract

Medications that may produce movement disorders are widely used. The resulting disorders are often highly disconcerting for the patient and their relatives, especially when the connection between medication and disorder is not recognized. However, ascribing an adverse drug effect to medication exposure is often difficult, especially when the side effect is rare. Covering various drugs - including the major classes of medications working primarily on the brain, specifically antipsychotics and antidepressants - this all-encompassing review of medication-induced movement disorders aids early recognition and improved treatment. The problem of what to do when the offending medication cannot be reduced is also reviewed. It discusses the best options for evaluation and treatment, including medical imaging and deep brain stimulation, and guides the clinician in managing the disorder, making this a vital reference for medical specialists and consultants in neurology and neuropharmacology and any clinician seeing patients on medications crossing the blood-brain barrier.

Abstract

Patients with many disorders considered primarily "neurological" also have behavior disorders that are either overlooked, ignored by the attending clinical neurologist, or referred to a psychiatrist. In fact, it is becoming ever clearer that neurology and psychiatry share common ground and need each other. In Psychiatry for Neurologists, a panel of internationally recognized psychiatrists, neurologists, clinical psychologists, and neuropsychiatrists review for the clinical neurologist those aspects of psychiatry that impact the management of neurological disorders. On the one hand, the authors illuminate the neurological aspects of such psychiatric disorders as depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, hysteria, catatonia, addictions, and personality disorders. On the other hand, they also explain in detail the psychiatric evaluation of the neurological patient and discuss the behavioral aspects of the major neurological disorders, including psychiatric complications of dementia and stroke, neuromuscular disorders, the psychiatric aspects of Parkinson's disease, epilepsy, Huntington's disease, Tourette's syndrome, and multiple sclerosis. Additional chapters examine childhood and geriatric disorders, fatigue, delirium, psychopharmacology, and the problems of managing psychiatric emergencies in a neurological practice. Comprehensive and timely, Psychiatry for Neurologists helps to close the artificial gap separating neurology and psychiatry so that neurologists feel comfortable managing the psychiatric aspects of the neurological disorders they treat.
