'Spoiled Distinctions' charts 20th-century experiments in the aesthetics of the ordinary, arguing that Proust and his literary and philosophical successors (Francis Ponge, Nathalie Sarraute, Yasmina Reza, Pierre Bourdieu, and Roland Barthes, among others) multiply strategies for reading and valuing the everyday. These authors explore the unsophisticated side of aesthetic experience. Alert to the ways in which the hunger for distinction shapes mundane acts of seeing and feeling, they strive to imagine less exclusive practices of art-making and of aesthetic perception.

"The beach is modernity's dreamscape. Emerging as a privileged site of leisure in the era of industrial capitalism, the seashore is often imagined as a paradisaical zone of exception-a space of sensory intensity, relaxation, and democratic possibility. As a stage for queer and non-hegemonic forms of desire, perception, and sociability, and as an ecological site of exceptional dynamism, the beach is a crucial but neglected setting for twentieth-century literature and art. In The Beach Effect, Hannah Freed-Thall reads various works with a coastally attuned eye drawing on both formal and eco-critical approaches. She argues that the beach is crucial to modernism and twentieth-century literature as a reflection of impermanence that is inhospitable to plot and narrative and instead functions as a stage for new encounters between language and sensation in which style comes into view. In separate chapters, Freed-Thall considers how the seashore becomes a laboratory for queer desire and of modernist aesthetic form in Proust's In Search of Lost Time; a refuge for domesticity in the work of Woolf and others; a space for misfit intimacies in Rachel Carson's The Edge of the Sea; and a place of sexual encounter in Claude McKay's Banjo and the works of 70s NYC artists. The concluding chapter looks at contemporary site-specific art works that examines the beach as a site of environmental devastation"--

Aggressively rebounding after recessions and the pandemic, sprawling landscapes of tourism in the Mediterranean continue to build upon the iconic spatial typology of sea & sun vacationing: the beach. But behind the leisurely scattered bodies and the quiescent summer shores, beachfronts are assembled as intensely ordered infrastructures for the heavy machineries of tourism. Approaching the beach as an operational socio-technical landscape, this book unpacks stories of construction, programming, and maintenance: from traces of moving sands in Lefkada island to mirror postwar developments in Delos and Mykonos islands, and from historic and bodily excursions to workings of the Athenian riviera to rituals of eco-certification under Blue Flags. The texts frame the beach as a machine, one with protocols of function and metabolic needs, studying how it directs the capture of land and bodies, while establishing forms of environmental control. As a repeatable and proliferating type of infrastructure space, the beach has the potential to expose parallel evidence of seeming globalizations and patchy planetarities.
