Fear, sadness, surprise, anger, lust and love - virtually nothing was more important in the paintings of the Golden Age than convincingly depicting human emotions. In this publication, the Frans Hals Museum and Rembrandt expert Gary Schwartz present a selection of masterpieces in which these emotions are sublimely portrayed. According to seventeenth-century connoisseurs, the beauty of a painting was not even half as important as the passions that could be seen in that painting; they formed the soul of the work. Painters such as Rembrandt, Frans Hals, Maerten van Heemskerck and Cornelis van Haarlem were masters at depicting a range of emotions. Their works are presented in a new context- the emotional life - and with a focus on the flourishing scientific study of emotions in our own time.

2013 is officially Frans Hals Year, marking exactly 100 years since the Frans Hals Museum opened its doors. The most important exhibition in this jubilee year is 'Frans Hals: Eye to Eye with Rembrandt, Rubens and Titian', in which key works by Frans Hals are presented amid paintings by such famed colleagues as Titian, Rembrandt, Van Dyck, Jordaens and Rubens. In this eponymous publication, all the works in the exhibition are presented side by side, enabling the reader to compare the masterpieces and see how the artists inspired one another. These unique confrontati- ons of master painters are essential to an understan- ding of seventeenth-century art. Famous painters, after all, often produced their works in response to one another, with the aim of surpassing the other and creating something unique. 0Exhibition: Frans Hals Museum, Haarlem, the Netherlands (23.3.-28.7.2013). 0.

Works by artists from Haarlem including Willem Buytewech, Willem Claesz Heda, Pieter Saenredam and Jacob van Ruisdael are shown alongside works by famous Dutch and Flemish painters such as Hendrick Avercamp, Jan Lievens and Anthonie van Dyck. Moreover, on the occasion of the 350th year of Frans Hals's death in 2016, two of his beautiful portraits that are now in Budapest are reunited with his paintings at the Frans Hals Museum The publication presents these gems from the Szépmüvészeti Múzeum through large colour images and informative texts about genres, techniques and the collection as a whole, thus throwing new light on the Haarlem pieces and at the same time painting a kaleidoscopic picture of the art of this period
