Abstract

Since the 1940s, the treatment of advanced cancer has been based on administering maximal doses of non-specifically toxic drugs in the hope that cancer cells would be killed more effectively than normal cells.  While this is occasionally successful, for most common cancers only a minority of patients experience any meaningful benefit.  Unfortunately, nearly all treated patients experience toxicities, which range from unpleasant to life threatening.  In recent years, however, our understanding of the molecular underpinnings of cancer has increased enormously.  We now have a much deeper understanding of how intracellular signaling pathways that control critical cellular functions can become subverted by the genetic alterations arising in a cancer cell.  In fact, we are now in a position to use this knowledge to design rational targeted therapeutic approaches that hold the promise of much greater efficacy with fewer side effects.  In this volume, oncologists and scientists from academia, government, and industry have come together to provide insight into strategies to modulate signaling pathways, which are currently being translated from the laboratory to the clinic.  These advances will hopefully usher in a new era in the treatment of cancer patients, and thus the goal of this volume is both to inform those interested in this field, and to inspire further contributions in this cutting edge area.

Abstract

One of the most exciting areas of cancer research now is the development of agents which can target signal transduction pathways that are activated inappropriately in malignant cells. The understanding of the molecular abnormalities which distinguish malignant cells from their normal counterparts has grown tremendously. This volume summarizes the current research on the role that signal transduction pathways play in the pathogenesis of cancer and how this knowledge may be used to develop the next generation of more effective and less toxic anticancer agents. Series Editor comments: "The biologic behavior of both normal and cancer cells is determined by critical signal transduction pathways. This text provides a comprehensive review of the field. Leading investigators discuss key molecules that may prove to be important diagnostic and/or therapeutic targets.".

Abstract

"Chaïm Perelman, alone, and in collaboration with Lucie Olbrechts-Tyteca, developed the New Rhetoric Project (NRP), which is in use throughout the world. Sir Brian Vickers, in his historical survey of rhetoric and philosophy for the Oxford Encyclopaedia of Rhetoric, states that the NRP is "one of the most influential modern formulations of rhetorical theory." This book provides the first deep contextualization of the project's origins, offers seven original translations of the writings of Perelman and Olbrechts-Tyteca from French into English, and details how their collaboration effectively addresses then philosophical problems of our age"--

Abstract

This book arises from a symposium held in Oxford to consider the most fruitful trajectories of rhetoric in the 21st century. The gathering comprised an international delegation of leading scholars convened to assess-from an array of perspectives - the various possible futures of the ancient discipline of rhetoric as it responds vitally to the evolving contexts of the new millennium. This collection commemorates that event by extending its scrutiny into a number of specific fields of inquiry. It includes a foreword by Prof James J. Murphy, an introductory article by the editors, and six further

Abstract

Known as the "swing justice," Justice Anthony M. Kennedy provided the key vote determining which way the Supreme Court would decide on some of the most controversial cases in US history. Though criticized for his unpredictable rulings, Kennedy also gained a reputation for his opinion writing and, more so, for his legal rhetoric. This book examines Justice Kennedy's legacy through the lenses of rhetoric, linguistics, and constitutional law. Essays analyze Kennedy's opinion writing in landmark cases such as Romer v. Evans, Obergefell v. Hodges, and Planned Parenthood v. Casey. Using the Justice's rhetoric as an entry point into his legal philosophy, this volume reveals Kennedy as a justice with contradictions and blind spots-especially on race, women's rights, and immigration-but also as a man of empathy deeply committed to American citizenship.A sophisticated assessment of Justice Kennedy's jurisprudence, this book provides new insight into Kennedy's legacy on the Court and into the role that rhetoric plays in judging and in communicating judgment. In addition to the editors, the contributors to this volume are Ashutosh Bhagwat, Elizabeth C. Britt, Martin Camper, Michael Gagarin, James A. Gardner, Eugene Garver, Leslie Gielow Jacobs, Sean Patrick O'Rourke, Susan E. Provenzano, Clarke Rountree, Leticia M. Saucedo, Darien Shanske, Kathryn Stanchi, and Rebecca E. Zietlow.

Abstract

In this volume, Stephen Prince has collected essays reviewing the history of the horror film and the psychological reasons for its persistent appeal, as well as discussions of the developmental responses of young adult viewers and children to the genre. The book focuses on recent postmodern examples such as The Blair Witch Project. In a daring move, the volume also examines Holocaust films in relation to horror. Part One features essays on the silent and classical Hollywood eras. Part Two covers the postWorld War II era and discusses the historical, aesthetic, and psychological characteristics of contemporary horror films. In contrast to horror during the classical Hollywood period, contemporary horror features more graphic and prolonged visualizations of disturbing and horrific imagery, as well as other distinguishing characteristics. Princes introduction provides an overview of the genre, contextualizing the readings that follow. Stephen Prince is professor of communications at Virginia Tech. He has written many film books, including Classical Film Violence: Designing and Regulating Brutality in Hollywood Cinema, 19301968, and has edited Screening Violence, also in the Depth of Field Series.
