Abstract

The papers in this volume represent the technical program of the 4th Eu- pean Semantic Web Conference, ESWC 2007, that took place June 3-7, 2007 in Innsbruck, the capital of the Tyrol region of Austria. The ESWC series of conferences is an annual, international forum for d- semination and discussion of the latest research and applications of Semantic Web technologies. It has become a major meeting ground for researchers and practitioners in the ?eld. ESWC is part of the European Semantic Systems I- tiative (ESSI), a cluster of major European research projects aiming to improve world-wide research and standardization in the area of the Semantic Web. The ESWC 2007 topics of interest included: ontology management, ontology ali- ment, ontology learning and metadata generation, multimedia and Semantic Web, semantic annotationof data,Semantic Web trust, privacy, security and - tellectualpropertyrights,SemanticWebrulesandquerylanguages, logicsforthe Semantic Web, reasoning on the Semantic Web, behavior in the Semantic Web, searching, querying, visualizing, navigating and browsing the Semantic Web, personalizationand user modelling, user interfaces and Semantic Web, Semantic Grid and middleware, Semantic Web Services, Semantic Web-based knowledge management, Semantic Web for e-business, e-culture, e-government,e-health,- learning, e-science, database technologies for the Semantic Web, data semantics andWebsemantics, semanticinteroperability, semanticwork?ows, andSemantic Web mining. TheESWC2007callfor papersattracted278submissionsofresearchpapers, a 54% growth with respect to the previous year. Amongst these, the Program Committee selected 46 papers to be presented at the conference.

Abstract

This book constitutes the proceedings of the International Joint Conference on Rules and Reasoning, RuleML+RR 2017, held in London, UK, during July 2017. This is the first conference of a new series, joining the efforts of two existing conference series, namely “RuleML” (International Web Rule Symposium) and “RR” (Web Reasoning and Rule Systems). The 16 regular papers presented together with 2 keynote abstracts were carefully reviewed and selected from 29 submissions. The RR conference series has been a forum for discussion and dissemination of new results on all topics concerning Web Reasoning and Rule Systems, with an emphasis on rule-based approaches and languages. The RuleML conference series has been devoted to disseminating research, applications, languages and standards for rule technologies, with attention to both theoretical and practical developments, to challenging new ideas and industrial applications. Both series of conferences aimed at building bridges between academia and industry in the field of rules and their applications. Therefore, RuleML+RR is expected to become a leading conference for all subjects concerning theoretical advances, novel technologies, and innovative applications about knowledge representation and reasoning with rules. This new joint conference provides a valuable forum for stimulating cooperation and cross-fertilization between the many different communities focused on the research, development and applications of rule-based systems. It provides the possibility to present and discuss applications of rules and reasoning in academia, industry, engineering, business, finance, healthcare and other application areas.

Abstract

This volume contains the lecture notes of the Summer School Reasoning Web 2006 (http://reasoningweb.org), which took place on September 4-6, 2006 in Lisbon and was hosted by the New University of Lisbon (Universidade Nova de Lisboa). Like the ?rst Reasoning Web Summer School (cf. LNCS 3564), which took place in 2005, the Summer School Reasoning Web 2006 was organized by the Network of Excellence REWERSE, Reasoning on the Web with Rules and Semantics (http://rewerse.net),itsmemberCentreofArti?cialIntelligence (CENTRIA) at the New University of Lisbon being responsible for the local organization. Reasoning is one of the central issues in Semantic Web researchand devel- ment.Indeed, the SemanticWeb aimsatenhancingtoday'sWebwithsemanti- carryingmeta-data andreasoningmethods.TheSemanticWebisaveryactive ?eld of research and development, which involves both academia and industry. The ReasoningWeb Summer Schools provideayearlyforumfor presenting and discussing recent developments in the Semantic Web ?eld. They have a specical focus on applied reasoning and on applications. They are primarily, but not only, intended for young researchers, especially PhD students and young professionals involved in research and/or development in the Semantic Web ?eld.

Abstract

This book contains a collection of seven thoroughly revised tutorial papers based on lectures given by leading researchers at the 5th International Summer School on the Reasoning Web, held in Brixen-Bressanone, Italy, from August 30 to September 4, 2009. The objective of the book is to provide a coherent introduction to semantic web methods and research issues with a particular emphasis on reasoning. The focus of this year’s event was on the use of semantic technologies to enhance data access on the web. Topics covered include design and analysis of reasoning procedures for description logics; answer set programming basics, its modeling methodology and its principal extensions tailored for semantic web applications; languages for constraining and querying XML data; RDF database theory and efficient and scalable support for RDF/OWL data storage, loading, inferencing and querying; tractable description logics and their use for ontology-based data access; and the social semantic desktop, which defines a user’s personal information environment as a source and end-point of the semantic web.
