This book systematically and consistently analyses a wide range of symbols for Europe, critically interpreting their often contradictory or ambiguous dimensions of meaning and uncovering several astonishing aspects of how Europe is currently identified - from above by the political elites as well as from below in critical arts or everyday life; from the inside by European actors but also from the outside by its surrounding others. The focus is on the European Union's main symbols, but they are interpreted in relation to a diverse range of other alternatives, so as to uncover the main facets of Europe as it is currently symbolised. Inspired by Walter Benjamin's classical 'Arcades Project', this book is a pioneering exploration of the interface between communication, shopping and everyday life. Based on a six-year study by over a dozen scholars on a specific site, it analyzes the links between power, media and consumption in contemporary urban culture. Illustrated with rich ethnographic detail, Consuming Media scrutinizes four main media circuits--print media, media images, sound and motion, and hardware machines--to assess how media texts and technologies are selected, purchased and used. Exploring the relations between different media, the nature of cultural citizenship and the power relations of public space, it presents an ethnography of globalization and develops a new approach to understanding media consumption.

This book concerns the implications and interrelations of key concepts of culture, defending an updated communicative notion of culture as meaning-making against a series of current challenges. The first part of the book distinguishes four main concepts of culture, presenting their histories, uses, limitations and mutual contradictions, which else often tend to be neglected. The second part scrutinizes neomaterialist and posthumanist critics’ antihermeneutic efforts to escape the spirals of interpretation and meaning. Learning from such contestations, the third part summarizes the arguments and in five theses reconstructs a contemporary and comprehensive agenda for cultural studies, based on creative imagination and communicative mediation in the dynamic interface between meaning and materiality. This thus provides a survey of fundamental concepts and theories of culture for students and scholars in the humanities and social sciences, while simultaneously also serving as an introductory guide to the contemporary debate in this field.
