Abstract

Vo Trong Nghia heads a leading architecture firm in Vietnam. Following his training in Japan, the architect returned to his home country with the humble ambition of preserving its essential landscapes in the face of booming urban development and prosperity. Peaceful forms in dialogue with the environment, pavilions of exact geometry and vernacular inspiration, and light structures where bamboo replaces steel are typical of his work. VTN Architects explores various paths in terms of form and technique, yet with the common pursuit of sustainability and an active social agenda, wherein vegetation also takes a central role. Fifteen works and three prototypes are featured in this volume.

Abstract

"In Fire and Memory, Luis Fernandez-Galiano reconstructs the historical, theoretical, and contemporary relationship between architecture and energy, calling on disciplines as diverse as anthropology and economics, and in particular on ecology and thermodynamics. Beginning with the mythical fire at the origins of architecture and moving to its symbolic representation in the twentieth century, Galiano develops a theoretical dialogue between combustion and construction that ranges from Vitruvius to Le Corbusier, from the mechanical and organic to time and entropy. Galiano points out that energy, so important to the origins of architectural theory in Vitruvius's time, has been absent from such theory since the introduction of the "dictatorship of the eye" over the other senses. With Fire and Memory, he reintroduces energy to the discussion of architecture and reminds us that the sense of touch is as necessary to an understanding of the environment as the sense of sight."--Jacket.

Abstract

From the key project of the Pamplona Baluarte to the office building for Metrovacesa in Madrid, via the Archaeological Museum of Vitoria, the Fine Arts Museum of Oviedo, the Congress Center in Palma, or the Norvento headquarters in Lugo, the fast-paced production rhythm of Francisco Mangado has not undermined his didactic vocation. This book gathers fifteen of the key works developed by the studio between 2000 and 2020. The architect himself introduces each work, explaining the concepts that are the driving force behind them: context, material, topography, economy, technique, space, program, process, representation, nature, heritage, urbanity, industrialization, energy, and identity.

Abstract

Since the turn of the century, the brothers of Lisbon-based practice Aires Mateus have expanded their formal and material repertoire, blurring the limits of the building with the exterior, the topography, or the existing. Such an enrichment of the architectural vocabulary combines the abstraction of their beginnings with many figurative references extracted from the historic and the vernacular. This issue celebrates their innovation with 20 works completed since 2000. The selection features numerous private homes but also the School of Architecture in Tournai (Belgium), the EDP Headquarters in Lisbon, and the Furnas Monitoring and Research Centre, located in the Azores.

Abstract

The voice of memory rings loud and clear on the pages of the new issue of 'AV Monographs', a compilation of conversations that Luis Fernández-Galiano has had over the years with ten masters recounting their respective lives and professional trajectories. Arranged by age of the speakers – from Frank Gehry, the most veteran of all, to Bjarke Ingels – and transcribed in the form of monologues, the interviews trace the biographical journey of each architect, from family origins, upbringing, and educational training to latest projects at the time of the dialogue, and are illustrated with the most characteristic works and projects of their career.
