Lepers, slaves, and the indigenous-these were the people who L loved Blessed Peter Donders, who chose to live among them to bring them spiritual and physical comfort. Father Pete, a native of Holland declared "Blessed" by Pope John Paul II, spent forty-five years until his death providing care for his neighbors in the small nation of Surinam on the north coast of South America. His complete letters, set in the context of a description of his life, tell the story of one man's heroic love as a follower of Christ. Moved by his loving trust in the "Good God," he was called to bring Christ to people neglected and segregated from the well-to-do and important. His constant message reminded all that Jesus shed his blood for them just as he did for us." His story calls all to realize that joy can be found in laying down one's life for others Such was the joy that lighted the way for his fellow Redemptorists who followed him to Surinam. It brought comfort to the sick and lame, the enslaved, and those living from hand to mouth. Globalization has forced us to realize that we cannot ignore the poor and suffering in the Americas and throughout the world. Blessed Peter's example provides courage and hope in our own efforts to love all, as Christ loves us.
