Die Suasorien des älteren Seneca (ca. 50 v. Chr. - 40 n. Chr.) - die einzigen lateinischen Suasorien, die aus der Antike überliefert wurden - sind bis jetzt unkommentiert geblieben. Der vorliegende Kommentar schließt diese Lücke und unterstützt den Leser bei der Lektüre der nicht immer einfach verständlichen Deklamationsexzerpte. Dem Kommentar voran gehen eine Neuedition des schlecht überlieferten Textes sowie eine Einleitung, in der übergreifende Probleme der Forschung zum älteren Seneca bzw. zur antiken Deklamation (Die Suasorie, Die Geschichte der Deklamation, Die sententiae, divisiones und colores, Überblick über die erhaltenen antiken Suasorien u.a.m.) behandelt werden. Allen an der Schulrhetorik und der Kultur der frühen Kaiserzeit Interessierten wird in diesem Buch ein von der Forschung vernachlässigtes Gebiet grundlegend erschlossen.

Mit den "Elementen der antiken Erzähltheorie" wird die erste deutschsprachige Monographie präsentiert, die systematisch das diskursive Feld der antiken Erzähltheorie analysiert. Anlass zu diesem Unternehmen bietet die Tatsache, dass antike Autoren wie Aristoteles häufig als Vorläufer für moderne erzähltheoretische Kategorien diskutiert werden. Auch wenn es derartige Korrespondenzen gibt, lässt sich nicht leugnen, dass antike erzähltheoretische Begriffe im Lauf ihrer Rezeption eine Umdeutung erfahren haben. Vor diesem Hintergrund arbeitet diese Monographie die Besonderheiten der antiken Erzähltheorie heraus.Zu diesem Zweck werden die wichtigsten antiken Reflexionen über das Erzählen, die sich in den verschiedensten Texten und Gattungen finden und in andere Diskurse eingebunden sind, in vier Kapiteln präsentiert: Zunächst werden die Grundlagen der antiken Erzähltheorie erklärt. Im zweiten Kapitel werden diejenigen Reflexionen analysiert, die zur Ebene der Geschichte (was wird erzählt?) gehören, bevor im dritten Kapitel diejenigen Überlegungen behandelt werden, die die Art und Weise der Präsentation betreffen. Abschließend wird untersucht, welche Wirkungen von Erzählungen in der Antike diskutiert wurden. This volume is the first to systematically analyze ancient narrative theory in German. A significant trend in the study of Greek and Roman historiographers is to accept that their works are to a degree both science and fiction. As scholarly interest broadens, in addition to evaluating ancient historians on the basis of the reliability of the information they record, and verifying the narratives against various elements of the material (inscriptions, excavations, numismatics), new studies are beginning to elaborate on the stylistic and narrative qualities of the texts themselves. The present volume offers a fine collection of essays that on the whole emphasize the literary dimensions of the ancient Greek and Roman historians. Offering narratological, linguistic, and theoretical approaches to historiography, the contributors of the book elaborate on the intersections between historiography and other literary genres, the literary manipulation of military events and the criteria of selectivity, the reception of ancient historical texts in other genres, time and space in historical narrative, and plenty of other relevant topics. The shared belief of the authors is that there is a close interrelation between the literary features and the scientific value of ancient Greek and Roman historiography.
