Etel Adnan neemt in haar beeldende kunst vaak het landschap als uitgangspunt. Net als Vincent van Gogh probeert zij daarin, met een geheel eigen kleurenpalet en schilderstijl, de kracht van de natuur op het doek over te brengen. Voor Adnan overbruggen haar schilderijen, net als bij Van Gogh, de beperkingen die taal met zich meebrengt. Ze vond in haar beeldende kunst een visuele taal die culturele grenzen overstijgt. In de tentoonstelling Kleur als Taal voeren Adnans schilderijen de boventoon. Haar vaak gesimplificeerde landschappen met intense kleuren en abstracte vormen gaan de dialoog aan met een aantal werken van Van Gogh. Daarnaast worden haar leporello's - zogenoemde harmonicaboekjes waar Adnan om bekendstaat, tapijten en literair werk getoond. Adnans unieke levensverhaal komt ook aan bod. Gedurende bijna een eeuw bewoog ze zich tussen verschillende culturen en talen. De implicaties van het opgroeien met een multiculturele achtergrond worden verkend. Hoe gaf dit haar leven vorm en klinkt het door in haar kunst? Etel Adnan (1925-2021) brak pas op 87-jarige leeftijd door met haar schilderijen. Ze maakte internationaal al eerder naam met haar literatuur en poëzie. Adnan was een onconventionele, intrigerende kunstenaar, filosoof, schrijver, schilder en activist. Ze groeide op in Beiroet, studeerde in Parijs en Californië en woonde en werkte jarenlang op beide plekken. Op 14 november 2021 overleed ze op 96-jarige leeftijd, tijdens de voorbereidingen van deze overzichtstentoonstelling in het Van Gogh Museum. Like Vincent van Gogh, she tries to transfer the power of nature to the canvas with her own color palette and painting style. For Adnan, her paintings, as with Van Gogh, bridge the limitations of language. She found in her visual art a visual language that transcends cultural boundaries. Adnan's paintings predominate in the exhibition Color as Language. Her often simplified landscapes with intense colors and abstract shapes enter into a dialogue with a number of Van Gogh's works. In addition, her leporellos - so-called harmonica booklets for which Adnan is known, tapestries and literary work are on display. Adnan's unique life story is also discussed. For nearly a century she moved between different cultures and languages. The implications of growing up with a multicultural background are explored. How did this shape her life and is it reflected in her art? Etel Adnan (1925-2021) only broke through with her paintings at the age of 87. She has already made a name for herself internationally with her literature and poetry. Adnan was an unconventional, intriguing artist, philosopher, writer, painter and activist. She grew up in Beirut, studied in Paris and California, and lived and worked in both places for years. She passed away on 14 November 2021 at the age of 96, during the preparations for this retrospective in the Van Gogh Museum.
