Abstract

The increased complexity of spinal surgical procedures in recent years has required more sophisticated anesthetic management of patients undergoing these procedures. Spine surgery anesthesia is now recognized as a distinct sub-specialty, increasingly undertaken by general anesthesiologists as well as neuroanesthesiologists. Anesthesia for Spine Surgery describes the anesthetic management and surgical procedures at every vertebral level in both adult and pediatric patients. The most important related considerations are covered, including: • Postoperative pain management • One lung ventilation during anterior thoracic spine surgery • Intraoperative neuromonitoring • Fluid management Additional chapters review the radiological features of normal and abnormal spines, common complications of spine surgery and ASA closed claims relating to spine surgery anesthesia. Written by highly experienced neuroanesthesiologists and spine surgeons, Anesthesia for Spine Surgery is essential reading for trainee and practising anesthesiologists, neuroanesthesiologists and spine surgeons.

Abstract

This book presents the most recent evidence-based facts on perioperative fluid management and discusses fluid management from basic sciences to clinical applications and the patients’ outcomes. Recent advances in understanding the Revised Starling principle with new concepts in tissue perfusion and the most recent techniques of perioperative goal directed fluid management are described. The endothelial glycocalyx functions and the influence of fluid management on its integrity are covered in detail; moreover, the techniques for its protection are also discussed. The dilemma of perioperative use of hydroxyethyl starch solutions and the resurgence of interest in using human albumin as an alternative colloid is explored. The problems of using unbuffered solutions during the perioperative period and comparison between restrictive versus liberal fluid management are discussed in full. Perioperative Fluid Management will be of interest to anesthesiologists and also intensivists.

Abstract

The anesthetic considerations and procedures involved in the perioperative care of the neurosurgical patient are among the most complex in anesthesiology. The practice of neurosurgery and neuroanesthesiology encompasses a wide range of cases, from major spine surgery, to aneurysm clipping and awake craniotomy. Case Studies in Neuroanesthesia and Neurocritical Care provides a comprehensive view of real-world clinical practice. It contains over 90 case presentations with accompanying focussed discussions, covering the broad range of procedures and monitoring protocols involved in the care of the neurosurgical patient, including preoperative and postoperative care. The book is illustrated throughout with practical algorithms, useful tables and examples of neuroimaging. Written by leading neuroanesthesiologists, neurologists, neuroradiologists and neurosurgeons from the University of Michigan Medical School and the Cleveland Clinic, these clear, concise cases are an excellent way to prepare for specific surgical cases or to aid study for both written and oral board examinations.

Abstract

This revised and expanded second edition presents the most recent evidence-based facts on perioperative fluid management and discusses fluid management from basic sciences to clinical applications and the patients’ outcomes. Lastly, case scenarios for every possible clinical situation describe in full the most up-to-date fluid management for the corresponding clinical problem. Perioperative Fluid Management, Second Edition is of interest to anesthesiologists and also intensivists.
