Best-seller aux États-Unis dès sa sortie en 1991, cet essai identifie et constitue une enquête sans précédent sur le « retour de bâton » médiatique, politique, juridique, économique, culturel, des années 1980, contre les droits des femmes, après les importantes mais fragiles avancées obtenues par le mouvement des femmes des années 1970.
